“We join the White Helmets today in honoring a decade of unwavering commitment to saving lives, rebuilding communities and documenting attacks against civilians in Syria.
Together, we remember the brave volunteers who were killed on duty, and those who continue to risk their lives to save others. Their courage and dedication inspire us all ❤️
This anniversary comes at a time where civilians in northwest Syria are being bombarded by the Assad regime and Russia, and the life-saving work of the White Helmets is as needed now as ever.
Let’s continue to support these heroes and their vital work towards justice and accountability in Syria.

Syrians in Lebanon are facing an impossible choice. Those who remain in Lebanon face Israeli bombings alongside racist violence and worsening humanitarian conditions, while those who escape to Syria risk arrest, torture or death the hands of the Syrian regime.
In Lebanon, between September 23 and October 12, at least 1545 Syrians were internally displaced (including 215 women and 379 children). At least 126 Syrians have been killed in Israeli attacks, while 29 have been wounded.
Syrians routinely bear the brunt of political and humanitarian crises in Lebanon. In Lebanon they are excluded from official shelters, and subjected to violent assaults, evictions and harsh humanitarian conditions. These discriminatory measures aim to pressure Syrians into returning to Syria, as 320,000 have now been forced to do.
Meanwhile, the Syrian regime has taken the opportunity to escalate its arrests of returning refugees. Of the 17 cases confirmed by SNHR, most occurred at regime checkpoints set up along routes from Lebanon. In early October, four Syrians returning to Sweida from Lebanon were detained by military intelligence. Their fate is still unknown.

“Intensive Care doctor explains difference between genocide and humanitarian crisis to media, who are trying to brand it as ‘Humanitarian Crisis’ for an entire year, as a mean to divert attention and justify it, on behalf of Israel: ‘Kate and All in all honesty, a humanitarian crisis is what you deal with when you have a hurricane, what you deal with when you have an earthquake. You have an an insult and a humanitarian response. This is my my career. This is what I do for a living. Every single person who does this for a living will tell you the same thing. This is different. This is not a humanitarian crisis, Kate, and I'm going to say it very clearly for your viewers to hear. This is genocide. When 70% of the population that are killed are women and children, when the population is starved of food, of water, of medicine, When you have attacks, repeated attacks on all the hospitals, the clinics, the aid distribution sites, the humanitarian aid agencies. That tried to help. More UN workers have been killed in Gaza than in UN history. When you have over 900 families that have been exterminated, that have been taken off of the civil registry, killed. When you have over 17,000 children that have lost one or both parents. When you have bakeries, aid distribution sites, churches, mosques, schools. And in the last three days, in the last 24 hours, in fact, a hospital today that was bombed, as you just reported, the hospital where I personally was working. And I can tell you they are working every second of every day to try and sustain life when Israel's strategy. And evidence on the ground suggests that they're doing the exact opposite. They were targeted today. There was a rehabilitation hospital, rehabilitation center that was targeted in the last 24 hours. And there was an orphanage that was targeted earlier this week. These are the types of places that are being targeted. And so it's really hard to hear it over and over and over again framed in the way that it's being framed in the media, which, frankly, Kate, is very misleading. It is very misleading. 365 days of this death tolls that are so far outdated. We have no many. We have no idea how many people are killed, but I am. I am genuinely afraid about what we're going to find out when the dust settles. History books will be written on this. And countries will have to reckon. Media agencies will have to reckon with their major role in the genocide of an entire population and in the destruction of humanitarian law and rule of order.’”
“This year, my birthday fell on a day that was incredibly difficult. Just a few days before, we had been forced to flee our home in the early morning, amidst the sounds of bombs and rockets. Since then, a new layer of suffering has been added to the war’s misery of repeated evacuation and displacement.
On my birthday, neither I nor my family members felt any inclination to celebrate. The rapidly changing events and the constant tension around us – the bombings, the sudden evacuation orders – left us all preoccupied with immediate tasks. Everyone had a role to play: fetching water, gathering firewood, finding food, charging batteries and phones. These simple, daily tasks now consumed countless hours.
Whenever there was a brief respite, I would try to escape into the world of books. I had downloaded some school textbooks before the war started, but I hadn’t had a chance to really delve into them. Even if I didn’t understand everything, reading was a way to recharge and to cling to the hope that things would improve and I could return to my studies. I remembered how easy it had been to find information online before the war. Now, it was so much harder.
As the day wore on, I went to bed feeling exhausted. My sister reminded me that it was my birthday, and the realization hit me that we had all forgotten. I couldn’t sleep. Thoughts raced through my mind as I recalled past birthdays, filled with joy and laughter. I used to spend hours planning for the coming year, setting goals and making lists. But now, I was overwhelmed by a sense of loss. The war had robbed me of so much: my home, my routine, my future plans, and countless precious moments with my family.
I had been on track to graduate top of my class, and preparing for a programming competition. I was also accepted into an academic exchange program. All of these dreams had been put on hold. Despite the pain and hardship, I felt grateful to be alive and to have my family. But the reality was that our lives had been irrevocably changed.” - Alaa Madi

Scholars for Syria
Scholars for Syria, started in the fall of 2016 as the brainchild of impassioned Syrian students and American friends, is a collective effort, a partnership, an opportunity for students, faculty, and community members from all nations, regardless of identity, to learn and share information about Syria and work toward its future. We engage in projects that pool resources, create ideas, and implement goals that can have a concrete, positive effects on the lives of Syrians everywhere. We hope to change the disastrous results of this prolonged conflict in whatever small ways we can, and we strive to weave a chain of connection that can result in a bridge built with the raw material of humanity, compassion, and love.
