For , we continue our deep dive into the first published feminist in the Américas the intellectual and literary juggernaut that is Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. “La respuesta a Sor Filotea” (The Response to Sister Philotea), a defense of her right as a woman to pursue intellectual interests and scholarship, became the most famous work of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Under the pen name of Sor Filotea, the Bishop of Puebla in 1691, humiliated and chastised Sor Juana's life as a public intellectual with the goal of silencing her. 🛑

Sor Juana didn’t fade to black quietly. In a full-throated defense of herself and all women, she responded with a master self-defense, defending her and all women’s right to knowledge and learning beyond the narrow path defined by the Church and state. 📚

Sor Juana’s writings were controversial, and she paid dearly: the Catholic Church eventually forced her to give up her books and writing instruments, her books burned by public order of the Inquisition. Silenced, she retreated into a convent to minister to the sick with the plague. She is now considered a national hero in Mexico and a defining figure in the history of feminist thought. 🕊️

Continuamos nuestra inmersión profunda en el gigante intelectual y literario Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz: "La respuesta a Sor Filotea," una defensa de su derecho como mujer a perseguir intereses intelectuales y académicos, se convirtió en la obra más famosa de Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Bajo el seudónimo de Sor Filotea, en 1691, el obispo de Puebla humilló y castigó la vida de intelectual pública de Sor Juana con el fin de silenciarla. Sor Juana no se retiró en silencio. En una defensa a gritos de sí misma y de todas las mujeres, respondió con una autodefensa magistral, defendiendo su derecho y el de todas las mujeres al conocimiento y al aprendizaje más allá del estrecho camino definido por la Iglesia y el estado.

Los escritos de Sor Juana fueron polémicos, y ella lo pagó caro: la Iglesia Católica finalmente la obligó a entregar sus libros e instrumentos de escritura, sus libros quemados por orden pública de la Inquisición. Silenciada, se retiró a un convento para atender a los enfermos de la plaga. Ahora se considera una he***na nacional en México y una figura definitoria de la historia del pensamiento feminista.

I always wondered what it must feel like to be sold on the shelves of a premium store. 🤯

Now I know what it feels like: exciting and joyful to see our products on shelves. Overwhelming and humbling b.c of whom it represents. My papis' and through them immigrants' hard work and sacrifice. 🥹

My own struggles as a daughter: starting a company for the flexibility to help with my dad's caregiving. Not knowing anything about business or having those role models to guide the way. But leaning in on my blessings, scraping for resources, and figuring it out by myself. Have you ever felt this? 🙋🏻‍♀️

And joyful: remembering that while there is a mountain for problems to solve, savor and celebrate the wins, no matter how small or grande. 💖

Siempre me pregunté cómo se debe sentir que te vendan en los estantes de una tienda premium.

Ahora sé lo que se siente: emocionante y alegre ver nuestros productos en los lineales. Emocionante para quien representa. El arduo trabajo y sacrificio de mis papis y a través de ellos de los inmigrantes.

Mi propia lucha como hija "primera generación": iniciar una empresa para tener la flexibilidad de ayudar con el cuidado de mi padre. Sin saber nada de negocios ni tener esos modelos a seguir que guíen el camino. Pero confiar en mis bendiciones, buscar recursos y descubrirlo por mí mismo. ¿Alguna vez has sentido esto?

Y alegre: recordar que si bien hay una montaña de problemas que resolver, saborear y celebrar las victorias, sin importar cuán pequeñas o grandes sean.
