As a lifelong IndyCar fan, my first exposure to IndyCar was when I was 10 years old, listening to the radio broadcast of the 1969 Indianapolis 500. My first in person 500 was the 1982 Indianapolis 500 and I was hooked for good.

Today, it’s Sunday afternoon and I’m watching the NASCAR race from Atlanta. I’m thinking about the fact that NASCAR races have a higher average number of in person fans, higher television ratings, and seem to have a more marketable product for their sponsors than IndyCar.

NASCAR conducts more than 80% of their races on ovals IndyCar conducts more than 75% of the races on road and street courses. Is it possible that maybe it’s time we get back to our roots and look toward oval tracks to bring success back to our series. Can I get an Amen?

So saddened by the passing of 2003 Indy 500 Champion Gil de Ferran from an apparent heart attack. He was only 56. Our prayers go out to his family and friends.
