Healing Hearts Donkey Shelter And Refuge-North Central Washington Region
“Until you have loved a donkey a part of your soul remains unawakened.”
WE WANT TO SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOP...
HIGHLANDS COMMUNITY SUPPORT COALITION of Molson, Washington presented us with a donation check of $7,000.00 and we are forever grateful to them.
HIGHLANDS COMMUNITY SUPPORT COALITION is closing their doors as of the end of August and Federal law requires a tax-exempt charitable nonprofit that is dissolving to distribute its remaining assets ONLY to another tax-exempt organization or to the federal government or a state or local government for a public purpose.
Treasurer, Laura Robinson, along with another Board Member, Anne Alden, had set out to find local non-profits that could use the money they have on hand. They paid us a visit so they could meet me in person, check out our facility, find out what plans we have in the works and to see what our needs were.
We showed them around, let them meet our donkeys while we shared their individual stories and told them about our plans to present some equine assisted events that will serve children and adults in our community by providing them with opportunities to nurture and develop important life skills like emotional connection, social interaction, communication skill-building, and confidence building.
Through our equine assisted events (with the aid of teachers, counselors and therapists) we hope to help our community in need to develop stress relief, self empowerment and relationship building specifically through a special connection with our rescued donkeys all in a safe, fun, and non-clinical setting.
We know that Laura and Anne had a lot of choices when it came to donating, and we are so grateful that they chose to donate to our cause and the rest of their HIGHLANDS COMMUNITY SUPPORT COALITION Board approved their decision to share some of their remaining funds with us.
We have a lot of work to do to finish preparing the barn for this upcoming winter, to get our meeting room ready for the public and to conduct a needs assessment for our specific events. Their generous donation will help us get that important work done. I told Laura Robinson, as she presented us with their check, that we promise to be a responsible stewards of both their donation and their trust in us.
Their generous donation is a gift that could not be appreciated more. Words are fleeting, and we want them to know that a simple “thank you” just doesn’t do justice to how deeply we appreciate their support.

My farrier explained the donkey trim just like this. He also said the hoof angle should align with the angle of the pastern. And he was quick to note that not all donkeys hooves are naturally angled exactly the same and not all four hooves are angled the same either; so he looks at each foot indvidually and trims then accordingly.
A good visual of a donkey hoof trimmed like a horse, with a long toe and stretched white line, low heels, and a donkey at the proper hoof angle.
Donkeys should not be trimmed like a horse!
First photo was given to me to be allowed to share, as she is learning to trim and wants to correct this angle. The second photo is Francis, trimmed today.

WE'VE GOT GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS.
We regret to inform you that our Donkey Care FunDamentals Event covering how to train your donkeys at our Spokane and Riverside facilities on August 17th & 31st have both been canceled" due to unforeseen circumstances involving some of our guest speakers and scheduling conflicts.
We have also noticed a sharp decline in people wanting to come to our facility to volunteer, tour the facility, visit the donkeys and register for events.
I imagine these hot temps are keeping people away and I'm inclined to think that, since COVID, people have gotten use to the idea of staying home more and have discovered the convenience of "Information Technology".
People all over the world are realizing the comfort and convenience of attending virtual conferences, tours, remote workshops, zoom meetings and viewing educational webinars, videos and courses without ever having to travel or leave their homes.
We've discussed this with our Board of Directors and we are going to be focusing the remainder of this year joining this new trend and are gearing our activities more towards the path of Information Technology.
In the meantime, our Spokane branch has been able to generate future interest with some local organizations. So it's full speed ahead. Stay tuned for big changes and renewed growth in 2025!
Each time you "LIKE" or "COMMENT" on our posts, it helps us stay connected. It takes just one second to LIKE (❤ is even better), maybe 10 seconds to comment and it doesn't cost you a dime.
Each time you "SHARE" one of our posts or photos, it helps other people see it; which in turn helps "Healing Hearts Donkey Shelter And Refuge-North Central Washington Region" page grow.
What else it does is show you support Healing Hearts Donkey Shelter And Refuge and our donkeys. And THAT means the world to me.

THIS IS ROSIE'S STORY-PART TWO
We received a call from one of our managers at our Spokane branch telling us that he thinks he has one of our former resident donkeys. I asked him what made him think he had one of our donkeys and he said Her name is Rosie and THIS donkey comes from the same location YOUR donkey relocated to.
He went on to explain that another woman in the neighborhood rescued Rosie and the other donkey. She didn't want to tell the branch manager where the donkey came from because she promised the woman that she would give them both the best care, but caring for Rosie was more complicated than she was able to handle so she turned her over to our Spokane facility. She kept the little mini because it was in a little better shape than Rosie and she would be able to work with her wheras she could not with Rosie.
The rescuer figured that the former owner would probably have assumed she would keep them both and she didn't want her to find out that she surrendered Rosie over to our Spokane branch.
She only wanted to keep the little mini because she felt she was way over her head with Rosie and she admitted that she didn't know a whole lot about donkeys in the first place.
I'm glad she realized that she wouldn't be able to give Rosie the help she needed and took her to a rescue facility that would. So many people want to "rescue" donkeys, but have know idea how to raise or train donkeys themselves and do more harm than good..
Our manager sent me photos of the mini the woman decided to keep. That did it for me. It was the same donkey that Rosie was adopted to become a companion for 3 years ago.
Rosie's hooves were trimmed while at the Spokane branch as her hooves were overgrown and in pretty bad shape. Rosie was very distrustful of everyone. It took two grown men to hold her still so she could be trimmed (even under sedation). She paced while she was there and the only time she would stand still for anybody was for Raesha while she was brushing Rosie.
It made sense to our managers and ourselves that we take Rosie back to our facility since she would be familiar with us and our location and we had a resident donkey here that she would remember. So this would help reduce her stress level.
When we brought her home, she arrived a stressed out basket case (constantly pacing), underweight and eating raveniously, her coat was disheveled and dull and she wouldn't allow us to come within touching distance of her.
It took a couple of months for her to finally calm down a bit and allow us to touch her. She's not perfect yet, but she is allowing us to approach her, halter her and lead. We just need to get Rosie trained to willingly pick up all four hooves for trimming. That's gonna take a while.
I have no idea what happened or how Rosie and her little buddy became rescue cases. Every 6 months I would reach out to the original adopter to follow up and see how things were going, but she never returned my emails, or my texts.
I called her twice after getting Rosie back to let her know I had Rosie and to ask her what happened. But, again, she would not respond. I just wish she would have reached out to me for help if she was in a situation and needed my help. But seldom, do people ask for help. Maybe it's pride that prevents them from calling, maybe it's out of fear that I would judge her. I'm not a judgemental person. I know that circumstances beyond someone's control often gets the better of people and they're at a loss at what to do.
Well, she's here now, and I imagine I'm going to be a bit more tough on the next poor potential adopter who would like to take her home. Sorry...not sorry, I'm gonna want to make sure this NEVER happens to her a third time.
If anybody knows an equine trainer here locally (Okanogan County or North Central Washington region) or within a 3 hour drive that is willing to work with donkeys, please help put me in touch with them.

ROSIE'S STORY-PART ONE
When we first received Rosie, a small standard, in August 2020, she arrived with elfen-shaped hooves. The owner had a teenage daughter who had a friend that was so concerned about the donkeys feet that she called me for help.
I won't go into details, but we finally got Rosie to our donkey shelter and refuge and immediately went to work on correcting her feet.
Our vet was present to anesthetize and monitor her throughout the operation, my husband was present to hold her feet up for the farrier and, of course, our farrier was present to trim the overgrown hooves (I took the photos).
My husband and I spent the next 10 months working with her to pick up all four hooves and behave for her trimmings.
Once she passed all of our requirements (friendly & approachable, accept a halter and lead, stand still while tied and picking up all four hooves for trimming?), we deemed her eligible for adoption.
A woman from Eastern Washington adopted Rosie as a companion for her mini. We thought this would be a perfect match because Rosie liked to protect the more meek donkeys in the herd and this little mini had been tormented by her former companion (a goat).
The woman had a cherry U-Pick farm and she had Rosie and the little mini on hand during July & August for the visitors to meet, treat and pet.
She met all of our requirements and, after several conversations, we decided Rosie would enjoy this new forever home (especially with having a little buddy to take under her wing). When I met the woman in in person, I found her to be quite friendly and approachable. I felt comfortable with my choice.
First impressions can be deceiving. Stay tuned for Part 2 of Rosie's story.

Looking for recommendations on good fly masks for donkeys...
Would love your recommendation and feedback reviews.
All she needs at this time is a foster to keep her safe til a new forever home can be found. Can you find it in your heart to be that foster?
UPDATE: Adoption pending. It's looking like Atzie will go home to a loving family in
Our first post on Atzie got shared 49 times! However, no one stepped up to foster her. So here are more details:
Omak, WA. We've nicknamed her the "smiling pup." As you can se in this pic, she's always smiling. She's about 20 lbs, intact and just received her first round of puppy shots. We are hoping to get Atzie spayed very soon. She's about 6 months old. Atzie has been kept safe by a kind-hearted teenager since December 2023. However, Atzie's future is uncertain. The teenager's elderly grandma recently returned home. Granny faces her own health challenges, plus she's caring for a teen, a toddler, and now a young energetic puppy.
Atzie is gentle (she plays fine with the toddler). She also gets along with the neighborhood dogs. Atzie is intact, we would like to find a foster home ASAP.
Link to foster application is here:

We would love it if you are located in Okanogan County so she can be spayed by one of our partner vets.
