Ace Hardware Arson Suspect

Fire Investigators from the Spokane Fire Department's Special Investigation Unit are
seeking the public's help in identifying a suspect involved in at least two arson cases in
the Moran Prairie neighborhood. Both incidents occurred at the Ace Hardware store at
4416 South Regal Street. The first fire occurred on July 4, 2024, and the second on July 11,
2024, both in the early morning.

In the first incident, the suspect is recorded igniting a pile of pallets. In the second, the
suspect and two accomplices were observed setting a pile of crushed cardboard on fire.
Investigators are also examining potential links to the area's recent grass and brush fires.
Anyone with information about these fires, the suspect, or the accomplices is urged to
contact fire investigators at 509-625-7120.

The Spokane Fire Department also asks the public to remain alert for any suspicious activity or individuals in the area and to report to law enforcement if necessary. Public assistance, including photos or videos from security surveillance systems, is often crucial in solving these dangerous crimes.

wildfire safety ember showers (1080p)
Did you know that most homes lost in a wildland fire are not due to direct flame contact but from embers landing on combustible items around the home? See what steps you can take to protect your home, even within our urban neighborhoods.

In our line of work, experience holds immense value. When that experience is coupled with a dedication to serving our community as if it were one's own family, mentors like Lieutenant Kevin Smith become invaluable assets. Congratulations, Lieutenant Smith, on reaching your 25-year milestone with the Spokane Fire Department! We extend our gratitude for your service and for setting a shining example for our younger firefighters.

Robbing Future Fires of Fuels
If you've observed alterations in our local green spaces, particularly the thinning of timber stands on city-owned properties, check out this video for insights into our new and growing program to mitigate the risk of catastrophic wildfires. The primary focus of this initiative is during the winter and early spring months to minimize the risk of pine bark beetle infestations and provide crews the flexibility to respond to wildfire incidents across the state during the summer. Special thanks to Jeff Humphrey at CityCable 5 for creating this informative video!

Wildland Fuel Reduction
Discover the strides we've made in our wildfire risk reduction program since its launch earlier this year. In 2023 alone, we successfully treated over 300 acres and are gearing up for another 300-500 acres in 2024. Our efforts span across key areas in the city, including Beacon Hill, the Palisades, and the Bluff. A big shoutout to our partners—the Washington State Department of Natural Resources and Spokane Parks and Recreation —for their unwavering support. Through our combined efforts, we can tackle this growing risk to our community head-on. These vital projects wouldn't be possible without the collaborative efforts of these agencies!
