{10:00PM Thursday} ***As of the 10pm advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Beryl was a Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph. However, Beryl is expected to weaken as it moves over the Yucatan peninsula early Friday morning. Beryl is forecast to arrive in the Gulf of Mexico as a tropical storm. At this time, a landfall in or near the Rio Grande Valley is looking more likely. Beryl is forecast to restrengthen into a weak hurricane before landfall early Monday. Expect 4-5” of rain with isolated pockets up to 7”+ from Sunday through Tuesday. Tropical storm force winds could arrive at our coast Sunday afternoon or evening and worsen overnight into Monday. Finalize your hurricane plan today, and start taking action tomorrow and Saturday if necessary for your location. We'll have more details on Beryl tonight and over the next several days...stay tuned.

The confidence for rain chances is on the increase across South-Central Texas for next week with Beryl but exact amounts remain uncertain. Texas beaches should expect increasing impacts from this weekend into next week. Stay tuned through the period for the latest on Beryl.

Keep an eye.

{1:10PM} The National Hurricane Center is keeping an eye on two tropical waves. The wave in the Caribbean Sea will move into Central America or the Yucatan Peninsula ... this wave has a small chance to form over the Bay of Campeche. It's likely staying well to the south of the RGV, but we could see a more active sea breeze on Sunday as a result of it. The southern Atlantic wave is likely to become the first hurricane as it moves closer to the Lesser Antilles by Monday.

Stay tuned for daily updates on the tropics, on air and online. Be sure to check out our "Tropics in 60" videos on the KRGV Weather app.

06/25/2024

NEW: National Hurricane Center is now monitoring a tropical wave approaching the Trinidad & Tobago for possible development in ~5 days as it moves into the Western Caribbean.

No tropical threats in the near term for the Northern Gulf Coast.

NHC is giving a low, 20% chance of development by late week-weekend as disturbance nears Belize & the Yucatan Peninsula. Model guidance support has been hit/miss, but the Euro & GEFS Ensembles both highlight this area as a low-probability region of interest over the next week.

In addition, with record warm water temperatures in the East-Central Atlantic, model guidance has flirted with the idea of a few tropical waves with a bit more interest east of the Caribbean.

Let's keep things rolling right along...shhh!

{8:30am Sat 6/22/24} (AL93): A broad low pressure system located over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico is producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Environmental conditions appear conducive for gradual development of this system as it moves slowly west-northwestward or northwestward, and a tropical depression could form before the system reaches the coast of northeastern Mexico Sunday night. Regardless of development, heavy rainfall could cause localized flooding across portions of northeastern Mexico and Deep South Texas through the end of the weekend. An Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft is scheduled to investigate this system later today, if necessary.

This area of low pressure has a 50% chance of formation.

It’s busy in the tropics🌀thankfully, little of concern along the northern Gulf Coast over the next 7 days. Tropical Storm has made landfall in Mexico. Two other areas with a medium chance of formation. Next name is .

Off the coast of the southeast U.S., now has a medium, 40% chance of development. Model guidance indicates a quick depression or weak tropical storm may form. Increased rain chances in. Northeast Florida/GA coast Friday.

In the Southern Gulf/Bay of Campeche by late weekend-early next week, National Hurricane Center is giving a medium, 50% chance of development.

A large ridge of high pressure will steer any tropical mischief in a similar path to Alberto. Additional heavy rain likely into south TX/Mexico.

Very hot conditions by the weekend in south Louisiana(91-95 & feel-like 105-108) into early next week before rain chances pick up by mid next week, which should allow highs to return to near normal levels.

06/17/2024

A TROPICAL STORM WATCH has been issued for the South Texas and Northeast Mexico coastline - from Port O'Connor, Texas - to Boca de Catan, Mexico - which includes the coast of the RGV. The tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico has been classified as "Potential Tropical Cyclone #1." That means the National Hurricane Center believes this system will develop into a tropical depression or tropical storm - and watches or warnings need to be issued. Tropical storm conditions are possible within 48 hours. This is mainly a rain event for the RGV, however gusty winds are possible in any thunderstorm this week. Do NOT focus on the center point of this storm - or the forecast cone of uncertainty. This is mainly a very large rainmaker which, regardless of the center position, will bring heavy rain to the RGV. 5 to 10 inches of rain likely, with localized amounts up to 15 inches possible this week.
