An Annual Notice of Coverage (ANOC) is sent out by your Medicare Advantage Plan or Part D plan, and provides information about changes to your coverage in the upcoming year. It’s usually sent out around September, since it can help you decide if you want to make changes to your coverage during Medicare’s Fall Open Enrollment period, which runs from October 15th to December 7th.

There are three kinds of changes to look for in an ANOC:

Changes to your plan’s costs like premiums, deductibles, and copays.
Changes to the plan’s network that might affect coverage for your current providers and pharmacies
Changes to the plan’s formulary that might affect coverage of your current drugs or their prices.
After you’ve read about the changes to your coverage coming up in the new year, you can decide if your plan will still meet your needs or if you’ll want to change it during Fall Open Enrollment.

If you haven’t received your notice by September 30th, contact your plan to request a copy.

Getting older has many advantages. You have the wisdom that comes with experience, plenty of stories to share and are usually more comfortable with who you are. If you have Medicare Part B coverage, another benefit is that you qualify for an Annual Wellness Visit.

This visit aims to keep you healthy and give you the tools to have a good quality of life as you age. The Medicare Annual Wellness Visit allows your health care team to review your health status, design a personalized prevention plan and connect you with critical preventive services covered by Medicare Part B.

Medicare Annual Wellness Visits create a snapshot of your health and provide a reference point for future visits. This improves the chances that a potentially serious health issue is caught early.

It's important to understand that Medicare Annual Wellness Visits differ from a physical exam conducted by your primary care provider.

Here are three major differences between these types of appointments:
1. Provider seen
A nurse or nurse practitioner typically conducts a Medicare Annual Wellness Visit. In most cases, you will not see your primary doctor or health care provider during this appointment.

A physical exam is conducted by your primary care provider, who may be a doctor, nurse practitioner or physician assistant.

2. What's included
A Medicare Annual Wellness Visit is meant to enhance your health and focuses on your well-being through interviews and assessments of your lifestyle factors. You will also be asked to fill out a health risk assessment before your appointment.

During a Medicare Annual Wellness Visit, the nurse will:
Evaluate your fall risk.
Measure your height, weight and blood pressure.
Offer referrals to other health education or preventive services.
Provide information related to voluntary advance care planning.
Screen for cognitive impairments like dementia.
Screen for depression.
Update your medical and family history.
A physical exam includes an age and gender-appropriate comprehensive head-to-toe checkup. This exam is completed to detect and prevent illnesses or injuries.

During a physical exam, your primary care provider may:
Check your vital signs.
Discuss acute or urgent health issues.
Review chronic health conditions.
Review your medications.
Perform a physical exam.
Ask about your activity level, relationships and home environment.
3. Frequency and cost
A Medicare Annual Wellness Visit can be scheduled after you have Medicare Part B coverage for at least 12 months and each year after that. Subsequent visits must be at least 365 days, or one full year, after your previous year's visit. Medicare offers the Annual Wellness Visit at no cost for those who have Medicare Part B coverage.

A physical exam can be scheduled at any time. You or your insurance carrier will be responsible for the cost of this exam. The total will vary based on what tests and services are completed during the visit. Ask your insurance carrier for coverage details.

Medicare Annual Wellness Visits and physical exams are best scheduled for the same day, with the wellness visit occurring first. Contact your health care team and ask if you qualify for a Medicare Annual Wellness Visit.

There are a few programs and strategies that might help you save money on your prescriptions.

If your income is below $1,903 per month as an individual, or $2,575 if married, and you also have limited assets, you could be eligible for Extra Help. Extra help is a cost-assistance program that can help you pay for your prescription drugs and pays for a portion of your Part D premium.

There are also State Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs (SPAPs) offered by most states that can help you pay for your prescription drugs. Some SPAPS also help pay for your Part D plan’s premium, deductible, and/or copays. Check this list of State Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs to find out if your state has an SPAP, to find out if you’re eligible, and how to enroll. You can also contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) to learn about possible SPAPs in your state.

If you do not qualify for these programs, check out these other options and strategies for those who are having trouble affording drug costs. For example, some of your medications may have manufacturer discounts or coupons that you can find on www.NeedyMeds.org.

Also note that beginning in 2025, your Part D our out-of-pocket costs will be limited to $2,000 in deductibles, copays, and coinsurance due to the Inflation Reduction Act.

Getting care in a disaster or emergency 16/07/2024

It's a good idea to be prepared in case a natural disaster strikes near you. Learn more about how to get the care you need if an emergency is declared in your area and you have to move to a safe area with available medical services.

Learn More
Seeing a doctor during a disaster or emergency: If you have Original Medicare, you can always see any doctor who accepts Medicare. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan or other Medicare health plan, contact your health plan about making temporary changes, like using an out-of-network doctor during an emergency or disaster.

Getting your prescription drugs during a disaster or emergency: You can move most prescriptions to another nearby in-network pharmacy, and back to your regular pharmacy when the emergency or disaster ends. Contact your Medicare drug plan if you need to use an out-of-network pharmacy.

Accessing critical care or replacing durable medical equipment during a disaster or emergency: Learn how to replace durable medical equipment (like wheelchairs and walkers), or get dialysis or cancer treatments in case of a disaster or emergency.

Our Story

My name is Jill Belvin. I have always been a TEXAS resident. Originally from East Texas, I made my way to Houston in 1984 and have been an agent here for 20 years. My daughter is a graduate of Texas A&M and my son is currently attending Texas A&M International in Laredo. I've been married to my husband for 25 years and he was an NFL football player for the Giants, the Edmonton Eskimos, and the Dallas Cowboys in the 1970s. I like getting out to enjoy the shopping and entertainment that Houston has to offer or heading out to Lake Conroe for a day of boating. Houston has been a great place to raise a family and to really enjoy life.
Community is important to me. I support Together 4 Children to help local orphans and I am also personally involved in my church. My time here in Houston has taught me a lot about local insurance needs. Flooding is always a concern. Having renters insurance to cover your personal items and to cover injury or damages you are liable for is just as important as having homeowners insurance if you own a property. Life insurance is often important as it protects your love ones in the event of a tragedy.

My agency is located on Jones Rd behind the Valero between Cypress N Houston & Grant Rd. We speak both English and Spanish to help you best understand your policies.
