Sobriety Hub's founder, Clay, is a recent graduate of Washington University's business school. Clay took a 2 year leave of absence from pursuing his degree, and in that time was a house manager for a sober living home himself.
"What I found while working in a sober living home is that owners and managers have a lot to worry about, like rent collections, vacancies, drug test results, medications, referrals, resident relapses, employees, etc. They utilize a hodgepodge of paper forms, Google sheets and group texts to keep track of everything. In this interview we talked to Dawn Smith, the executive director of the Hilljack House , a sober living community in St. Louis, Missouri. Dawn shares her personal story of long-term recovery and loss of her son to a he**in overdose. This tragedy inspired her to work in the field of recovery.
Dawn emphasizes the importance of keeping her personal recovery separate from her work. She has observed that when people start working in the field, they often neglect their own recovery, which can lead to poor outcomes.
Dawn also explains how the Hilljack House operates as a community-focused non-profit. It provides a home-like environment for residents, encouraging personalization and offering shared common spaces. Community engagement is a significant aspect of their program, including activities like sporting events and float trips.
Dawn also discusses the importance of alumni engagement, family reunification, and ongoing support for those in recovery. She is clear that residents don't "graduate" from the Hilljack House; instead, they "transition" into the community. After transitioning, they're encouraged to remain involved with the community, providing hope and examples for current residents.
When asked about future plans, Dawn reveals the organization's careful consideration of scaling up. While there is an ongoing need for sober living facilities, they are committed to maintaining the same level of support for each resident. They have grown from three to five houses in the past five years, and are considering how to expand while preserving their unique approach to recovery.
Dawn then talks about her use of Sobriety Hub, which has enabled her to become completely paperless. She appreciates the software's ease of use and the developer's responsiveness to her needs. Dawn sees a future of continued use of Sobriety Hub, praising its features that allow for customization of access for different roles within her organization.
Had a fantastic interview with one of our favorite customers Brandon Fitch, today. Brandon runs The Retreat Sober Living down in Aurora, Kentucky.
In this interview, Brandon discusses his personal experience with addiction and recovery, which inspired him to work in the field of sober living. The Retreat Sober Living is unique due to its remote location, which helps residents avoid temptations while focusing on recovery. Support groups and other recovery resources are available both in-house and within a short distance from the facility.
The Retreat aims to provide a comfortable, home-like environment for residents, with amenities like a large family room, movie room, and plans for a recreation area. Most residents have private rooms, with some shared rooms and a dorm-style area for those who cannot afford a private space initially. The Retreat uses Sobriety Hub software to help manage chores, drug testing, and other aspects of the program. Brandon is particularly impressed with the simplicity and ease of use of the software, which allows him and his staff to access information quickly and efficiently.
In his five-year plan for The Retreat, Brandon hopes to create an even more structured, comfortable environment for residents, akin to a "summer camp" where they can enjoy various activities while focusing on their recovery. He expresses gratitude for the support he has received from his co-founder, as well as the assistance provided by Sobriety Hub software.
