In the long history of classical music, you’ll find examples of composers borrowing themes and motives from other musical works. The “Homages” of clarinetist/composer Bela Kovacs is a collection of short pieces written “in the style” of several composers of varying regions from different time periods. The full compilation, arranged in chronological order, begins with an excerpt from a Bach sonata. I'll be playing the fifth Homage — "to De Falla", the highly regarded 19th century Spanish composer known for his neo-classical adaptations of Spanish folk music and Andalusian flamenco. In this short little piece, Bela Kovacs, a Hungarian, captures the spirit of both, expertly. - Robert Walker

Love Story
The complicated love triangle between Schumann, his wife Clara, and Brahms is one of the most well-known in the history of classical music. It remains a mystery whether Brahms and Clara were ever more than close friends. Clara was often a source of inspiration for both Robert Schumann and Brahms and each dedicated music to her. Schumann dedicated his first string quartet to Clara for her 23rd birthday. Brahms frequently sought Clara’s approval of his compositions, and she often performed his works for solo piano. Thoughts of Clara were often at the center of Brahms’s most impassioned works, and in many ways she was a muse for one of the greatest composers that has ever lived. Three more days! Our next free virtual concert featuring Bach, Paganini and Beethoven will be aired at 7:30 pm this Saturdy Feb. 13, and will stay available for 7 days. February is the month in which we celebrate love. That may look a little different this year, with many of us separated from friends, family, and loved ones, but it doesn’t diminish the connections we feel with others. When words cannot fully express the emotions we want to convey, music can be a powerful tool. We hope you and yours will be able to listen to this concert together and experience some of the most emotive music ever written. No one knew more about love than Johann Sebastian Bach. He was a devout man who loved his his family and had twenty-one children! You will hear his passion come to life in the three movements of his Cello Suite No. 1 in G minor arranged for flute! Niccolò Paganini was an Italian virtuoso violinist known for such incredible technical ability it was rumored he’d sold his soul to the devil! His set of Caprices are a musical caricature of romance - playful, impulsive, and unpredictable. They’re not so different from the language of love, and for this performance, Caprice No. 7 will be beautifully expressed on flute. Ludwig van Beethoven needs no introduction when it comes to mastering the art of musical fervor.
