Even some of the most storied companies with the most storied brands fall
victim to “swing and miss “ marketing . They pay good money to firms who think they’re being “creative “
by swinging at an outside pitch and passing on the one right down the middle .
How do you win by swinging at rogue pitches ?
That’s how you strike out . Not how you hit .
Bud Light Seltzer is a perfect example of AB swinging at a bad pitch .
It’s a great idea to face off with the budding seltzer brands out there such as White Claw and Truly. These beverages are not only popular with drinkers 25-50 but both women AND MEN drinkers under 50. It’s no longer uncool or unmanly to drink such alcoholic beverages and the smart people —and AB should know this —know that drinkers 25-50 don’t just have one they have a handful at least . You really can’t go wrong with low calorie alcohol infused and flavored seltzer .
Unless you call it Bud Light seltzer .
Unless you call it Bud Light seltzer when there isn’t Bud Light in it .
Then you have a confused branding mess .
Why does it say Bud Light on it ?
There is some malted rice in it , but one commercial says with a cheeky grin there is “no Bud Light “ in it at all !
What’s next in this odd marketing trend ?
Pepsi Milk ? “Hey folks it’s milk with no Pepsi in it !”
Or how about Jim Beam Hot Dogs? “Delicious hot dogs without an ounce of Jim Beam in them!”
Whoever came up with this campaign was lazy and figured they’d just sell the seltzer by parachuting in the Bud Light name when it made no sense .
And they ignored big things.
Of all the AB brands Bud Light consumers probably skew the oldest . Even when young drinkers were drinking beer instead of the spiked seltzer they weren’t choosing Bud Light .
And the biggest thing they ignored is heritage . This is what happens when you get swing and miss “creatives “
Who don’t really know or care to know the company .
Hire people who know you and help make sure you know who you already are !
What made AB famous around the world ? Carbonated alcohol known as beer .
If anyone knows how to make bubbles rock your world it’s Anheuser Busch .
AB should hop into the market and reclaim the world of carbonated happiness it created in the first place .
“There’s a name for flavored bubbles . It’s called soda pop .
And there’s a name for hard , delicious seltzer from the master of the bubble —Anheuser Busch . AB seltzer . Nothing new . Just better.”
There’s the insinuation that the AB seltzer is better than the others because it is made by a legendary company . They’d have to ultimately prove that by pleasing consumers . But that’s AB’s job .
It’s the marketers and brand promoters’ jobs to give you a fighting chance to get real and show it .
Marketers and brand promoters owe companies more than swinging at outside pitches just to be groovy.
There are only rare occasions when brand remakes are in order . The most successful marketing campaigns , whether it be a company or even a fledging politician , always rely on the roots of what made them great and what makes them who they are .
