GONE 😢
RIP.... your life mattered
From trauma to trauma, disappointment to disappointment, a young man dreams of the stable home he deserved and has never found.
Poor GROOT. He’s just a youngster, 2 years old, and he was brought to the shelter as a stray after he was found abandoned in an empty apartment. After the trauma of abandonment, he had to face the trauma of a loud, chaotic, overcrowded shelter where he is finding himself completely overwhelmed. He is stressed and anxious, and exhibiting the hallmarks of that by biting his leash. This is so common, we find ourselves typing it over and over into dog posts. Normally, once a dog is out of the shelter, past their trauma, and ensconced in the quiet and calm routine of family life, this behavior dissipates. Once they are getting plenty of exercise, structure, and time to decompress and warm at their own pace to their new life, they are no longer anxious and playing tug of war with the leash. We wanted to get Groot’s face out there so that people see his a dog in dire need! Soon the shelter will just throw hin on a list to die, and all because he was a victim of human neglect and unkindness. Please share him far and wide or if you are an experienced foster or adopter who can take him in, hurry and MESSAGE OUR PAGE for assistance.
INTAKE DATE: April 2024
GROOT, ID # 197454, 2 Yrs. Old, 78 lbs., Male
Brooklyn ACC, Large Mixed Breed, Gray / White
Surrender Reason: Stray, found in an empty apartment
Behavior Assessment Rating: New Hope Only
No Children (under Age 13)
Medical Behavior Rating:
AT RISK MEMO:
Groot is in need of emergency placement due to behavior concerns. He has a low threshold for arousal and is quick to leash bite during walks and head whip when touched. Medically, Groot has CIRDC, otitis externa, dermatitis, pododermatitis, interdigital cysts, and allergies.
Groot was brought to the care center as a stray found in an empty apartment. Groot has not adjusted well at the care center has displayed a low threshold for arousal and has allowed minimal handling with selective staff. Groot has made it difficult for staff to walk him because of his intense leash biting when coming out of his kennel, on walks, and when going back inside his kennel. As a result, we recommend he be placed with an experienced, adult-only foster or adopter home through one of our New Hope partners that can address these challenges with the use of a certified trainer that uses force-free, reward-based methods only.

Groot is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Groot greets the novel female dog anxiously, whimpering. Groot gradually becomes aroused, gently leash biting on the lead, panting heavily with red eyes. Groot is moved away to reduce stress.
ENRICHMENT NOTES
04/25/2024:
Groot vocalizes from his kennel as the handler approaches. Upon seeing the handler, he stands and paws at the kennel door. Treats are offered through the bars, which Groot takes eagerly. He continues to bark as the handler opens the door. When leashed, Groot attempts to push his way out of the room, prompting the handler to brace the door with their knee. Despite being given a plush toy, Groot drops it and begins to pull hard, When exiting the kennel room Groot hard pulls and begins to kennel fight the dogs in the room. Once in the hallway, Groot maintains his strong pulling behavior throughout the walk. He starts to bite at the leash outside and is distracted showing more interest in treats than toys. Groot consistently seeks treats during the walk, occasionally jumping on the handler. He responds to the "sit" cue and finds patches of grass where treats are tossed. When treats are no longer offered, he mouths the handler's hand with mild pressure. Returning to the kennel room, Groot is quickly guided back inside due to him kennel fighting his way back inside.
04/18/24:
Groot greets the handler standing at the front of his kennel with neutral body language. Groot is easily leashed and escorted outside for walks. Groot will mildly pull but for the most part walk beside the handler. Groot spends his time taking in the environment. Groot is escorted back to the facility where he is kenneled and unleashed without any issues.
04/10/24:
Groot greets the handler standing in his kennel neutral body language, with red eyes. Groot is easily leashed and escorted to the BA room for his assessment. while walking him over Groot hard pulls. through out his assessment Groot full of anxiety and in ability to settle. Groot nips the handlers hands to solicit treats. During handling Groot would bite the leash, chewing it like a pacifier and would hard turn his head when ever near his neck or hind legs were touched. In frustration Groot would jump or lunge at the handler. Groot is escorted back to his kennel where he is unleashed with no issues.
04/10/24:
Groot greets the handler standing at the front of the kennel door and is easily leashed but once leashed Groot begins to leash bite. The handler redirects him off of the leash with food and he willingly let's go. Groot is escorted to the play yards to conduct his greets. (Please refer to PG notes) After his interaction with the other dog, Groot begins to display anxiety and vocalizations. Groot began to leash bite with a soft mouth and once again was redirected off of the leash with food. Groot was escorted back to his kennel, and he was unleashed without any issues.
INTAKE BEHAVIOR - Date of intake:: 4/9/2024
Summary:: friendly,tolerant, allowed handling
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR - Date of initial:: 4/9/2024
Summary:: pproached with wagging tail, took spam gently. Tense for exam. Winced and lifted lip when ear touched (painful)
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations::
Place with a New Hope partner,
No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments::
No children (under 13)- Due to Groot low threshold we recommend an adult-only home.
Place with a New Hope partner- Due to Groot arousal we recommend he be placed in an experienced, adult-only foster or adopter home through one of our New Hope partners.
Potential challenges: :
Strength/leash pulling,
Low threshold for arousal
,Leash-biting,
Basic manners/poor impulse control,
Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
Potential challenges comments::
Basic manners/Mouthiness- In the care center Groot jumps on the handlers and takes treats roughly, he also mouths quickly on the handler's hands. Please see handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control & Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition.
Strength/leash pulling: Groot is a very large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
Low threshold for arousal/Leash Biting- Groot became highly aroused during his assessment, making it difficult to continue to attempt to conduct the handling. He jumps up and bites the elash during that jog portion in conjunction when taking him out fo his kennel. Please see handout on Arousal.

Bear has been ADOPTED!
He is friendly and outgoing with strangers. He is friendly and playful with kids, other dogs and cats! In fact, BEAR lived with 2 children, a small dog and a cat and was wonderful with all of them. This poor puppy entered the shelter 11 months old, and now he has rounded his 1st birthday all alone and with no one to celebrate it with – no carefully wrapped up toys or treats, no one to share a cupcake or pup cup with. He’s being terribly overlooked, and he really wants his life to resume. He is, as one would expect, high energy and playful. He’d love an active, experienced family who will take him on runs, or hikes or long walks. He’d love to have a back yard where his family will toss balls for him (he loves balls!) and help him get all his puppy energy out. He’s a smart cookie too! He’s learned commands and likes to show them off for treats. He is crate trained (though he really hates it!). And he is partially housetrained so will need a family who will enjoy working on training with him so he can gain new skills! Eager to learn, eager to please, wiggly and wonderful and ready for a lifetime of love, won’t you give this little man a chance? Due to his energy, he’d be best in a home with kids Age 13 and over he can’t knock over in his enthusiasm. MESSAGE OUR PAGE to foster or adopt Bear now!
I HAVE A SWEET MOVIE!

What my friends at ACC say about me:
I have lived with cats. I have lived with dogs. I would do best in a home with only adult humans (Age 13 and over). I’m sensitive and shy. I’ll need extra help from you.

His family had Bear for 10 months and had acquired him from a friend. Bear lived with 2 Adults, 2 Children (Age 4 and 11), 1 Dog and 1 Cat. Around strangers he is friendly and outgoing. When Bear is in possession of toys or food, he will hover over them with a tense body. Bear is partially housetrained. His energy level is very high.
Other Notes:
Bear goes potty on wee wee pads. He has accidents daily and will go on the floor. Bear jumps up often or non-stop. He pulls hard on leash. When on walks, Bear is just aware of his surroundings (ex: moving objects like bikes, skateboards and cars). He isn’t bothered if he is disturbed when sleeping, when he is startled, when he is pushed or pulled off furniture, or if his paws are touched. He is fearful if he is restrained/held, or if his collar is grabbed.
Has this dog ever had any medical issues? No
Medical Notes: Noted none.
For a New Family to Know:
Bear is a very active and playful dog. He spends most of his time where people are. He allows his family to bathe and brush him. Bear is taken for 1 hour walks, 3 to 4 times a day and he pulls mild to moderately on leash. Bear was crate trained for up to 3 hours but does not do well. During car rides Bear gets nervous getting in, or being in, the car. Bear knows the cues for: sit, give me paw, go get it. His owner’s favorite thing about Bear is how very playful and active he is. Bear likes to play with balls and shoes. He eats Alpo/Pedigree wet and dry dog food.

He has demonstrated this at the care center, tensing, lip licking, and pulling away when his collar is held and head whipping when his feet are touched. It is important to go slow with him and allow him to set the pace and tone of interactions. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity.
Fearful/leash-biting: Bear has been fearful in the care center, shying away from touch and snapping at the leash. He has improved while in care, but adopters should be prepared to go at Bear's pace. Please see handout on Decompression Period.

Frenchy has been placed with a New Hope rescue
We don’t deserve the love and loyalty of dogs. And then there are those monsters who don’t deserve them at all.
What kind of horror of a human being gets a dog, or in this case, two dogs, and then just leaves them outside 24 hours a day, all the year through? But that was FRENCHY’s life and that of her brother Sea Bass. The “parent” (and we use this term loosely) didn’t know anything about Frenchy at all. When the intake staff asked the usual questions, she didn’t know if Frenchy was housetrained because she never let her in the house. She didn’t know if she guarded her things because we are betting she never gave poor Frenchy a single toy or high value treat. She didn’t share any info on what may have been Frenchy’s favorite activity because Frenchy’s activity was just to exist, day in and day out, without human companionship, kindness, or a cuddle. Frenchy didn’t matter to this woman at all! Something tells us this poor dog, who the medical staff stated “was very sweet but scared” and in all caps added “VERY SHY AND SCARED, BUT NOT AGGRESSIVE,” spent her days and nights in the cold and the rain and the sun and the darkness with only her brother Sea Bass for comfort. So coming to the shelter should have been her chance at finding the loving family she always deserved because Frenchy is a wonderful friend who was traumatized by her prior life. Instead, the shelter has put her on the list to die ONLY FIVE DAYS into her stay! Why? Because they say Frenchy is resorting to army crawling on the floor, refuses to walk and requires significant encouragement to move. And they admit that although Frenchy hasn't shown any signs of escalating to defensive behaviors, she tends to shut down until she finds herself in the presence of people she feels at ease with. Well, what do you know! This poor girl survived one trauma to be thrust into another and no one is even giving her a chance to acclimate or make friends. We’re disgusted. More than that, we are advocating very hard for this shy, scared and VERY SWEET girl who finally deserves to know what love means, because no one deserves it more than her. If you are an experienced foster or adopter in a home with older kids (Age 13 and up) who can give her the life she always dreamed of but has never found, please step up for her now. MESSAGE OUR PAGE for assistance.
What my friends at ACC say about me:
My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I am finding the shelter a bit overwhelming. Outside one-on-one I am a great big cuddle bug. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home.

Owner Surrender Reason: 4/18/24 - Cannot afford to care for Frenchy

I CAME TO THE SHELTER WITH MY BROTHER SEA BASS, ID 198035 (also in need): https://nycacc.app/ #/browse/198035
AT RISK MEMO:
Frenchy is in need of emergency placement due to behavior concerns. Although Frenchy has displayed some social behavior, she is struggling to cope with the stress of the Care Centers. She was observed to exhibit high levels of fear and resorting to army crawling on the floor. At times, she refuses to walk and requires significant encouragement to move. While Frenchy hasn't shown any signs of escalating to defensive behaviors, she tends to shut down until she finds herself in the presence of people she feels at ease with. Medically, Frenchy is apparently healthy.

04/21/24:
Frenchy is introduced to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Frenchy is nervous, not being able to focus. Frenchy will heavily pant with wide eyes, keeping her distance remaining avoidant.
ENRICHMENT NOTES
4/23/24:
Frenchy exhibited signs of fear and reluctance as the handler approached her crate. Despite treats being offered, she remained withdrawn, avoiding interaction and pressing further into her crate. When the handler attempted to leash her, Frenchy dodged and curled into a ball. Eventually, she was coaxed out of her crate but followed with a hunched posture and tucked tail. Upon exiting the garage room, she hesitated before attempting to return to her crate. She is taken to the Behavior room, where she allowed a drag leash to be attached, Frenchy continued to show signs of apprehension and a desire to retreat. She slowly explored the room, cautiously allowing light petting from a secondary handler before returning to the primary handler. Although she tolerated touch at times resting a head on the handler's leg, Frenchy also displayed signs of stress, such as yawning, and attempting to hide under the desk. She was then leashed and quickly returned to her crate, where she quickly rushed into her crate.
4/19/24:
Frenchy was brought into the canine behavior office to conduct a handling assessment. She displays a low, trembling body and shies away from quick movements, but tentatively approaches staff to solicit contact. She attempts to hide at one point, crawling underneath a table, but is able to be lured out by the handler. She allows handler to place a collar and drag leash and completes the assessment without issue
