Throwback Thursday... In April, SHS welcomed Mississippi's Poet Laureate, Catherine Pierce, to share her work and conduct a poetry workshop with students two English classes. The SOSD Discovery Center's Reading 2 Succeed program facilitated bringing Ms. Pierce to campus as part of National Poetry Month, and it was the last stop on the Laureate's tour of Mississippi promoting poetry.
Ms. Pierce read poems from her latest book, Danger Days, and English Comp II and AP Literature classes analyzed them. Ms. Pierce also lead students in a writing exercise to create and share their own poems.
In partnership with Friendly City Books in Columbus, Reading 2 Succeed also purchased a collection of poetry books by Mississippi authors curated by Ms. Pierce.
Thank you to Katherine Pierce, Friendly City Books and Reading 2 Succeed for providing this excellent learning experience for our Yellow Jackets!

During their studies on corrections, Year 1 Law and Public Safety students recently participated in a self-defense session led by Doug Bedsaul, the owner of Downtown Martial Arts, along with his assistant Abbi Crump. This session was particularly significant as correctional officers often lack protective gear and must depend on self-defense tactics in their daily duties. Mr. Bedsaul generously offered his expertise to the class free of charge, enhancing their understanding and preparedness for future challenges in the field.
Thank you to Downtown Martial Arts Academy and Mr. Bedsaul for working with our high school students!

SUNDAY! Don't miss the inaugural SHS Gospel Choir Spring Concert on May 19 at 5:00pm at Greensboro Center! We got a preview of some of their repertoire last weekend at the choir's rehearsal clinic, and we are all in for a treat!
Last Saturday, special guest and Starkville native Tito Lanier joined the group for rehearsal and time setting the foundation for the "why" of gospel music. Mr. Lanier is an educator, musician and speaker, and we were delighted to welcome him as a guest clinician. Choir members worked in small groups to explore how unity and harmony impact their craft, and then broke into sections to prepare for this Sunday's concert.
Check out a few glimpses of the clinic and be sure to join us SUNDAY for the concert! You'll be blessed!
These kiddos! We kicked off Senior Week with a skate party at Skate Odyssey hosted by Dr. Spann, and it was so fun! We can’t believe we’re almost at the end of the journey with these outstanding students. Can’t wait to see their sparks fly high!!
