"A child rejecting a parent is an attachment pathology. The differential diagnosis for severe attachment pathology is child abuse by one parent or the other.

In all cases of severe attachment pathology surrounding court-involved child custody conflict, a proper risk assessment for possible child abuse needs to be conducted to the appropriate differential diagnosis for each parent.

The two DSM-5 diagnoses of concern are possible Child Psychological Abuse by the allied parent (V995.51) who is producing a shared persecutory delusion and false attachment pathology in the child, and possible Spouse or Partner Abuse, Psychological (V995.82) of the targeted parent by the allied parent using the child as the weapon.

There needs to be a proper risk assessment to the appropriate differential diagnosis for each parent. There is a Risk Assessment Handout on the Attorney Resources page of my Consulting Website."
