SBU Solar Racing

The SBU Solar Racing Team is an inter-disciplinary student–run competitive organization. In 2011, we won the award for the Best Electrical Design.

The team holds shop hours from 2 PM to 4 PM on Fridays and 12 PM to 2 PM on Saturdays in room 002 of Heavy Engineering throughout the academic semester. In SBU Solar Racing, engineering students work together to design, build, and test a solar-powered boat. Working independently in our machine shop, we produce a majority of the vessel components in-house, such as motor controllers, drive-train, co

After 1667 miles over land 🚚 and around 18 miles out on the water 🚤 (across all events), Stony Brook Solar Racing has made it back home from the with as many pieces of the boat as we started with, earning 5th place in every event and 5th place overall. 🏆 We were honored to also be presented with the Sportsmanship award. 🤝

This was our third season in a row as a team since starting again in 2022, and probably the most fun we’ve had ever at a Solar Splash. Thanks to everyone there, whether you had a boat or not, for making it such a memorable experience for this team.

A huge thank you to our partners, without which our year-long endeavour wouldn’t have paid off:

We’ve made lots of new friends, and hope to make an even better boat for the 2025 Solar Racing competition season. But for now, we take in all the sun we can get, and let those batteries charge for next fall. ☀️

Our seniors may have graduated, but that doesn’t mean we get to rest! is in 1 week, and we’re hard at work to make sure we have a better boat than ever before!

A huge thank you to our partners, without which our year-long endeavour wouldn’t be possible:

Race day is a lot sooner than you might think!
🚤 🚤 🚤
We’re counting down the weeks until PEP, our first competition on our calendar. That’s right, we’re doing 2 competitions this year! Promoting Electric Propulsion for Small Crafts, or PEP for short, is a new-to-us competition run by the American Society of Naval Engineers, and we’re excited to be taking part! Today, we’re highlighting a key partner helping make PEP happen.

First up is the Office of Naval Research, who funds the Promoting Electric Propulsion competition to grow American competitiveness in marine technology. Their mission is to have student teams research, design, model, simulate, fabricate, test, and control craft for an annual five-mile race on April 15-16, 2024. This program is strengthening the workforce we need to design the solutions for tomorrow.

Without their support, we wouldn’t be able to compete in PEP, or have a PEP to compete in! Thank you for being a Platinum tier partner of the Stony Brook Solar Racing Team!

Election season is upon us! A large part of our E-board every year is made of graduating seniors, so if you want your chance at getting more involved with the team and its activities, now is your chance! Nominations open March 5th!
//
Do note, you must be an active member having attended 2 events to be eligible to run.

Our Story

In SBU Solar Racing, students work together to design, build, and test a solar-powered boat. Working independently in our machine shop, we produce a majority of the vessel components in-house, such as motor controllers, drive-train, composite molds, solar panels, control system, and various mechanical/electrical devices. We also have many related research opportunities outside of the scope of competition including high voltage EVs and lithium polymer batteries. In 2011, we won the award for the Best Electrical Design. In 2012 we implemented a redesigned carbon fiber hull, which resulted in a 90% weight reduction. In 2014, we placed 1st at the annual IEEE Solar Splash Competition in Dayton, Ohio. This is the result of an improved surface piercing drive-train with two gear ratios and new motor controllers. We hope to capitalize on our past successes, and continue to improve and innovate our designs.
