Posted ⢠There are some children born into the world with the incredible life-gift of a strong will and an indomitable spirit. These children are often deeply misunderstood, and there are rows of books lining bookstore shelves with instructions about how to break their will, how to subdue their spirit, how to force their obedience. But our world suffers a tragic loss of leadership, passion, and insight when parents follow these harsh, punitive practices. Not only can we parent these gifted children with gentleness and respect, but the gifts we get in return are priceless.
Take a look at some of the common descriptions used when referring to the characteristics of a strong-willed child:
Demanding, Insistent, Stubborn, Bossy, Cocky, Difficult, Challenging, Fixated, Contrary, Rebellious, Defiant
Now look at some of the common characteristics of adults who are world leaders, CEOâs, entrepreneurs, innovators, world-class athletes:
Decisive, Determined, Persistent, Authoritative, Confident, Valiant, Gutsy, Committed, Resourceful, Nonconforming, Bold
Note that the characteristics are the same, but are negative when applied to a child and positive when applied to an adult.
Other characteristics of strong-willed children that coincide with adult leaders:
â˘highly creative and intelligent
â˘passionate and intense in their interests and beliefs
â˘insatiable need to know âwhyâ
â˘typically learn by doing
â˘intense need to test the status quo
â˘highly perfection-oriented (often focused on expectations of themselves instead of others)
â˘tend to need high levels of validation
â˘intense need to be heard
â˘strong need for emotional safety
â˘often resistant to change unless they feel some control over the change
â˘often highly sensitive
â˘typically intensely focused on their latest project or interest
â˘conscientious/highly committed
â˘intensely independent
Maintaining a healthy parent/child relationship is vital as you work to find a balance between setting limits with your richly spirited child while not limiting their freedom to stretch and grow and develop into who they were created to be.

Who's working on making this change? đď¸It's a hard one to make if this is what you grew up hearing from your parents.
This little tweak can make a big difference. Let's model what it look like to take radical responsibility for our own behavior.
What if I told you that laziness doesnât exist?
Many of my clients beat themselves up when they feel âlazyâ or canât bring themselves to maintain the house.
But for , I want to talk about whatâs really going on when that happens.
The âlazinessâ you see is the tip of the iceberg. You see:
ă° Procrastinating
ă° Incomplete tasks
ă° Increased sleeping
ă° Sluggishness
ă° Lack of progress
ă° Watching TV
ă° Scrolling phone
ă° Mess/clutter
You might feel ashamed or embarrassed of these things.
But other things are likely going on underneath:
ă° Battling depression
ă° Lacking motivation
ă° Struggling with anxiety
ă° Different values/priorities
ă° Neurodivergence
ă° Choosing rest
ă° Being paralyzed by the invisible load
ă° Burnout
ă° Loss of identity and purpose
When someones behaviour seems âlazy,â it is not a matter of will powerâ there is always something going on under the surface.
There are likely legitimate reasons why can't bring yourself to do a seemingly âsimpleâ task.
There are likely legitimate reasons reason why you feel so exhausted that you âget nothing doneâ all day.
It isnât laziness. It isnât a character flaw. Itâs often something more.

Today, be kind to yourself.
Take time to boost your mental health by doing 3 simple but powerful things:
+ Unplug. Remember, social media is geared to amplify anxiety or provoke a response. Just breathe deeply and embrace the non-digital world, even for a little while.
+ Express gratitude. Pause and be thankful for something, whether itâs the roof over your head, a good meal, or somebody who loves you. Gratitude changes the way we see the world â and is a key to personal growth.
+ Practice kindness. A sincere compliment, maybe. Or paying a coffee forward. Or showing gentleness and generosity to those who need it. Whatever you choose, just know that kindness is a wonderful way to not only make the world a better place â but also to increase your own happiness.

Opportunity knocks, they say, and when it does, we should seize it. But sometimes, that's easier said than done. For many people, change can feel scary: it's all too often easier to stay in a familiar place than to embrace growth in our lives. And those blockages can be reinforced by trauma, childhood conditioning, or things we simply choose to believe are true.
At My Therapy Connection, you're in a space where a skilled, empathetic therapist can help you to overcome your fears, change those unconscious habits that sabotage your life, and develop the tools to live a life that is truly free.
