Waiting on the Night Train 🚂, 1982
Duke Epolito Sr. & Larry Zankowski
The iconic ghostly white sculptures on the defunct New York Central rail platform in Syracuse, NY have lasted for nearly 40 years - the train however, has yet to arrive.
These rogue sculptures have become an integral part of the cultural fabric of Syracuse and local favorite. The scarves 🧣 , not originally part of the “commuter art” piece were added by a local school teacher.
A petition to keep the sculptures on the platform after it was restored garnered enough support to save the well known series of fiberglass figures.
You can drive by them and catch a glimpse on 690 West just before the North Townsend st. Downtown exit (13.)

Cayetano Valenzuela of Black Rabbit uses illustration and hand lettering to craft curious painted signs and prints that evoke wonder, magic and fable. The phrase depicted on this mural grew from his fascination of Syracuse being a tough town that endures. It is a nod to creatives who stay and keep up the good fight!

Immersive Cloud
2017 Daekwon Park, MATR studios
Located at the intersection of S. Townsend and E. Genesee streets, this reflective installation is a part of our permanent public art collection.
Immersive cloud is intended to serve both as a medium for providing immersive experiences as well as a platform for fostering social interactions.
The installation consists of a school of polished stainless steel disks elegantly floating on top of a forest of thin columns. When immersed in the installation, the surrounding environment including the trees, people, sky and the city are reflected, distorted, and multiplied before the eyes. The variety of spaces, formed under and above the undulating disks, can also function as a canopy or street furniture for the public to rest, contemplate, converse, and play.

Irene Cheng + Brett Snyder designed a mural for downtown Syracuse that simultaneously celebrates Syracuse’s industrial past and its current status as an artistic hub. At first glance, the image is historical, depicting a pump house and brine distribution center, along the Erie Canal.
On closer inspection, viewers realize the image is a mosaic composed of dozens of unique QR code tile, each linking to a contemporary arts organization in the greater Syracuse region.

**the key to this fully interactive mural is to stand on the corner of Salina & Fayette outside Wildflowers Armory for best view. It’s meant to be digested through a viewfinder (phone or camera.) If you’re 50 feet away or more the image becomes more clear of Salt Barge docking on the left side in downtown Syracuse, along the Erie Canal.

MPA Student’s Asphalt Mural Brightens Syracuse City Hall | Syracuse University News The paved area in front of Syracuse City Hall that was previously used as a parking spot is now a vibrant space to be enjoyed by the public, thanks to the efforts of city officials and a member of the Maxwell School’s current cohort of master of public administration students.
The first legal street art in the city of Syracuse is located just outside the courthouse at 317 East Jefferson Street. ‘Grazers’ was created in 2007, by Leon Reid IV, aka VERBS or Darius Jones, widely credited as being among the pioneers of 21st century street art.
Three winding twisting parking meters elongate to make the appearance of them grazing on the tree like a certain long-necked herbivore.
Although Leon began his street art career with aerosol spray cans as VERBS, he would soon work increasingly with steel, pushing the limits of 3-dimensional street art as Darius Jones. By adding titles to his illegal works, such as "Fleur D'acier" and "The Kiss", Leon IV urged the public to consider street art as more than a random act of vandalism.

Forman Park.
The Rothschild family commissioned this newly installed sculpture as a gift to the City of Syracuse in memory of Alan Rothschild (1941-2021).

Rothschild was an entrepreneurialbusinessman, civic leader, philanthropist, and the grantee of two U.S. Patents. The sculpture, Inventive Spirit, is intended to represent the spirit of the thousands of creative Syracusans who established the city as a center of invention and innovation.
