Pulsing Xenia
It’s #CoralReefAwarenessWeek! Check out this cool video of some of our coral, called pulsing xenia. Xenia are one of the few corals that have a constant pulsing motion. We are able to “frag” or “cut back” any corals that are overgrowing by strategically cutting pieces off and gluing them into plugs and other spots of the tank to grow in a new spot. This regular maintenance of fragging keeps the corals from getting too big and stinging each other. Check out this behind-the-scenes video of a (quick) Amur tiger training session with cubs Coba and Zuzaan! Training our animals to participate in their own healthcare is a vital part of our mission of animal care and welfare. Seahorse dad giving birth!
Happy #FathersDay from these rad animal dads – seahorses! Male seahorses are the ones who get “pregnant,” after the female seahorse deposits her eggs into the male’s pouch after a mating dance. The male will release sperm into the pouch, fertilizing the eggs, and then incubating them until they “give birth” to hundreds of babies at a time. When the babies are “born,” the male expels them from his pouch in a cloud of tiny, fully-formed seahorse fry. The pool party continues! This time, Yaad joined Tukada, if only for a little bit. It’s so fun to see how the twins' personalities differ. Yaad is usually the calf who acts more independent, straying farther from the adults and generally being braver in the face of new experiences – except when it comes to water, apparently! From the first time with the little blow up pool, Tukada has been much more of a “water-baby” and stays in the pool for much longer than his brother.
