Four or five times a month, I spend an evening defending those charged with crimes at arraignments. I meet with the defendants and listen to their stories. I review the paperwork to make sure that is correct and proper so that the Defendant starts with representation and knowing that someone is there. Do I get much resolution at arraignments? No, but that is not the point.

The point for me is to preserve the integrity of the judicial process. It is to make sure that those charged are represented at all stages throughout their case.

Would I rather be home watching the Olympics? No, I prefer doing necessary work for those who need the representation. Arraignments are a small way for me to contribute to the justice system in addition to the remainder of my day to day practice and I am glad to be able to do it.
