SUNY ESF
Focused on the study of the environment. Are you ready to Improve Our World?
The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) is the oldest and largest college in the United States devoted solely to the study of the environment. Since our establishment in 1911, we have developed innovative programs in a broad range of academic areas related to biology, chemistry, engineering, management, design and planning. We focus on educating problem solvers who will help develop the science and technology for a sustainable future.

Update from across the pond π¬π§
Students Penelope Diamond and Jordan McGuire have been squeezing in some sight-seeing while studying abroad in London!
Transferring to ESF is the move, but don't just take our word for it. Here's what Conner Grant, an Aquatics and Fisheries Science major, has to say:
Groundhogs have been spotted on our Syracuse campus! Let's learn some more about our neighborhood woodchucks:
π§βπ¬ The scientific name for this species is Marmota monax
𧬠They have 2 layers of fur; the dense gray inner layer makes them look "frosty"
π² They can swim and climb trees
Another exciting π² In April, over 20 ESF Forestry Club members and SUNY ESF Ranger School students went to Newcomb to help plant thousands of tree seedlings!
This massive undertaking is an integral part of the Adaptative Capacity Through Silviculture (ACTS) study, with project sites located in Newcomb, Heiberg Forest and a site in northern Michigan. This study is focused on evaluating different strategies for managing forests for climate change mitigation and adaptation. The planting component of the study is part of what is called βassisted migrationβ, or planting tree species that are expected to become more adapted to the anticipated future climate conditions of a given site.
