SPRING FEVER?!?!
Not really... well, here any way, If you are starting seedlings to set after the first frost, pick the slow growers or cool crops. My joy is my tower gardens that grow all year long. So, while I miss my soil adventures, I don't have the Spring Starting Sense of Urgency quite so bad.
I have two other of these systems that move inside during winter and back outside in the spring. Self watering, fast growing, no soil to wash off. Makes gardening easy peasy. I even have cucumbers growing on my diningroom tower at present! No chemicals, just minerals and water. YUM! And the extra light has completely eliminated my SAD issues as well. Double bonus! My Upstyle Greens (new business, yes, ANOTHER one) customers, love the interesting lettuces, Asian greens, Kale, collards and super flavorful basil and cilantro and other herbs I deliver to them each week. If you want one of these, call me. Small investment for lots of fresh greens all year.
Having a couple greenhouses doesn't hurt either. One repurposed carport frame and one Harbor Freight 6x8. I have broccoli, romanesco, kale and brussels sprouts still producing in my hybrid and regular soil beds. Who knew I'd love my plant buddies so much! Overall I'm at a current count of 183 sq ft soil and hybrid soil beds currently with several more raised planters, soil bags and more to be added as spring gets closer. Did I mention that I really dislike the whole grass mowing thing? I'm eliminating as much as possible except what I desire for clippings to add to my composters.
It has taken several long painful days to get the soil beds cleared and reconditioned with hearty healthy home compost, and the soil tested. More bending needed to get the seeds in the ground and sprouted starts transplanted. Meanwhile, I spent a full day getting the vertical gardens cleaned and ready for their new crops. Tomorrow I start the fill process to let the water release the chlorine and other nasties before the tender starts get their welcome mat spread.
Disassembling, cleaning and reassembling both outdoor towers took one 8 hour day, which would have gone more quickly if I could have put more of the parts through the dishwasher, but it gave me time to get all the seedlings planted and under the lights. I have one last harvest from the diningroom tower, for a week of salads, smoothies and stirfry, and then will come the breakdown and reset of that tower.
BOOM!!!!
Then just 3 weeks until I enjoy the first harvest of baby greens and arugula. O should have plenty of extras for sale this year.
Here's my naked empty homes just waiting to start their new families. Ask me why I love my towers!
After clearing 106 sq ft of garden beds and considering how loudly my back is complaining, there is still the joy of preparing the home for the starts, tended and nurtured so carefully for the last several weeks.
Next year another foot of height will make the process easier.
I still have 48 sq ft to clear before I am done. OUCH!
What to plant is always such a fun exercise. Fortunately I have many wonderful things to choose from and get to plant at least 100 of this incredible assortment, plus a few to spare in case there are some sleepers.
Woo Hoo! Three to four weeks to harvest in the towers! And there will be plenty to offer others!
I realized again today how far away we, as a society have gone from being in touch not only with one another but especially with the earth. Each time a plant pops it head above the soil, I wonder what it thinks it will find?
I have noticed recently how the wildlife are behaving, particularly the crows. They seem more curious about why there is so little human movement these days. It must be very odd to the birds and squirrels to see so little human interaction with the environment. I wonder what they think about our hiding in our homes?
I wonder also about why my Christmas cacti are blooming merrily away, oblivious to the fact that we are in spring. And it is not just the one of them but three in separate buildings! Perhaps it is less about Christmas when they bloom than the extra carbon dioxide exhaled by humans as they are trapped inside more hours of the winter. I find this worth looking into, but likely won't because at the moment I am getting ready to plant for late spring and summer crops. The blueberry bushes are setting fruit from early blossoms and the ground is waking from the winter cold and rain. I wonder what they think? Perhaps these little guys know that it is too soon for the other blossoms to cheer me up. NAH, it's more likely the CO2.
My indoor garden pumps incredible life and oxygen into my home and the lights keep my mood light, (except when I go all introspective and thoughtful)
LIttle did I know that my first Vertical Garden that I purchased in 2013 would become an obsession. I've always been a gardener, but since the body seems to resist the excess stress of full time backbreaking soil gardening, my aeroponic and hydroponic systems have created an avenue of continuous cycles of growth. The continual season of growing at Upstyle Greens has me dropping seeds as fast as my three towers can grow. One more harvest from Old Reliable and new starts should be edible 4 weeks. Love the ease of fresh food right at the table. Having my other towers outside, safely stowed in a greenhouse for the cooler months, and in the fresh air from spring to late fall, makes for year round bounty.
No muss, no fuss and no DIRT! My muscles and joints appreciate the rewarding results of growing smarter, not harder.
