What is BOMBA? Bomba is a traditional Puerto Rican dance or style of music with African roots.
Bomba emerged 400 years ago from the colonial plantations where West African enslaved people and their descendants were.
It was an outlet for them to release sadness, anger and resistance. It was a way to express their experiences and feelings, through instruments and body movement.
Bomba was also used to celebrate community and to communicate with each other.
It is now an essential expression of Puerto Rico’s African Heritage. 💃🏾

Ulani Stewart is a Tacoma Native and one of the contestants for the Poetry SLAM. “One of my favorite things about being planted here is experiencing how big and supportive the creative community really is. Being surrounded by like minded individuals helps push me to tap into my craft on a deeper level. In my free time I focus on channeling my life experiences into my poetry so that I can transmute my emotions into an experience that can be felt by all. My writing is inspired by universal human experiences such as love, death, pain, grief, heartbreak and rebirth. In a world that seeks to ostracize us from one another we can be sure that pain and love will be our greatest equalizer. From humble beginnings of overcoming obstacles Deyana, a Baltimore native was introduced to poetry at a young age. It became a a therapeutic outlet for personal healing. “Throughout my journey of healing and self-discovery, I discovered the beauty in the process of self-growth, self-care, and self-love. I’ve performed all around the world and even entered in a few talent shows and a couple slams. I’ve traveled to Kentucky back in 2017, to do my first ever Southern Fried Poetry competition. Since then, I’ve taken a break to better my craft.
