Douglas Lager
Clean and simple beer from the PNW.
When it came time to name this this beer of ours a lot of thought went into it. We needed a name that could speak to this region that didn’t come off campy or pandering. Many names came and went… but Douglas stuck.
At it’s core Douglas is inspired by the great Douglas Fir tree, a very unique and highly specialized species of pine tree (not actually a fir) that is native only to Cascadia. These majestic giants showcase the natural beauty of this place and informed many of the label design elements. From the deep and dark green color (healthy forest), to the stylized “D” at the top of the label, the oval shape & scalloped edges (pine cone) and even the slightly striated background (needles). We wanted Douglas to feel uniquely from here, just like the ever-present Douglas Fir.
But it’s more than just trees… we wanted this beer to have some personality. Giving the beer a common name allows us to tap into the power of personification and add a little fun to the overall experience. It’s easy to shout from an across a crowded bar and shortens into some catchy nicknames, many of which we probably haven’t even thought of our ourselves!
All in all, Douglas is a beer that inspires engagement! So…grab yourself a bucket of Dougies and spend time with good company.
Sorry we can’t make it to dinner tonight but we’re heading your way in a few days. 🍻
DOUGLAS UPDATE…
Three months into a bureaucratic limbo with pending federal applications, we’ve made a bold decision: opting to uphold our commitment to quality, we’ve decided that the initial batch of Douglas brewed earlier this summer no longer meet our standards- so we’re scrapping it. This beer is meant to be enjoyed fresh in your hands, and we won’t settle for less.
On the bright side, a fresh batch is currently lagering and will be in your hands by late November or early December. In the meantime, we’ve got a few launch parties in the works—details to follow. No fluff, just real talk. Cheers to better brews ahead!
While the government takes it’s sweet, precious time to approve our applications, we’re still out here filling (and breaking) bottles. In the meantime, let us know where you want to see Douglas. We have a some launch parties planned in Seattle, Tacoma, Bellingham and Duvall. Stay tuned for details on that.
We spent morning previewing Douglas to our distribution partners at NW Beverages and we are both humbled and grateful for the positive response we received.
The next step for Douglas is to put beer into bottles tomorrow via our handy dandy bottling line AKA The Beast, followed by lighting a fire under the asses at the TTB to finally approve our permits. After that, we send the beer off to NW Beverages where it will be placed into some of your favorite spots.
This is just the beginning! Stay tuned! 🍻
Well folks, after 60 days we’re still waiting on the TTB to approve our applications for Douglas.
So close!
In the meantime, where would you like to see Douglas when we finally get the green light?
You did it!! With the help of 122 generous supporters we raised enough money to bring Douglas to life! We are humbled and inspired by all of you and cannot wait to get a Douglas Lager in your hands. Thank You!!
We're fortunate enough to see the majestic Mount Rainier almost every day. Too bad you can't see it from Golden, Colorado where its namesake beer is now brewed. But Douglas is brewed here in the beautiful state of Washington. Inspiration lives around us and keeps us driven to go the extra mile to get it right.
Have a beer from here!
From brewing to bottling, we’re dedicated to the authentic PNW lager experience. We were lucky enough to score Fish Brewing old bottling line (which includes og parts from Olympia Beer’s bottling line), moved it piece by piece from Olympia up to Tacoma and have been reassembling it for the last year and a half. It’s pretty cool knowing that a piece of PNW beer history will be an integral part of getting Douglas into your hands.
We have so many great prizes lined up for those who support our Kickstarter launch. This'll give you something to do when you're kicking back and enjoying our ice-cold lager! Head on over to our Kickstarter page to discover how you can contribute to making Douglas THE ultimate local lager. Cheers! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/990783621/douglas-lager
John Marti is our Head Brewer. He's devoted a ton of time developing a flavor that's just right. "We’ve long searched for a local Pilsner malt for our lager that can stand up to traditional malts grown in Europe and we believe that we found the perfect choice that matches the flavor in its own way." Head on over to Kickstarter to see how you can help Douglas. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/990783621/douglas-lager
We know there are other lagers out there, but we believe the PNW has a legitimate heritage and we’re proud of that. We wanted to honor that heritage by creating a new, easy-drinking lager that’s made here. We're proud to announce an everyday lager with locally sourced ingredients that is brewed and bottled in the PNW. We're almost there, but could use your help.
