Here's a guide to help you prepare for your first massage and understand its numerous benefits.

Before the Massage:

- You may feel some discomfort or pressure, but it should never be painful. Communicate with your therapist if you need adjustments.
- You may be asked to breathe deeply or relax specific muscle groups.
- Some massage therapists may use essential oils or play calming music to enhance the experience.

After the Massage:

- Take your time getting up from the massage table, as you may feel a bit lightheaded.
- Drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins released during the massage.

The Diaphragm;
The Unsung Hero of Breathing:

Hey there, science fans! Today, we're going to talk about a muscle that's often overlooked, but plays a crucial role in our overall health and wellbeing: the diaphragm.

*What is the diaphragm?*

The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity. It's the primary muscle used for breathing, and it's responsible for contracting and relaxing to allow air to enter and leave the lungs.

*Functions of the diaphragm:*

- *Breathing:* The diaphragm contracts and relaxes to allow air to enter and leave the lungs.
- *Supports the spine:* The diaphragm helps to stabilize the spine and maintain good posture.
- *Aids in digestion:* The diaphragm helps to increase blood flow to the digestive organs, supporting healthy digestion.
- *Supports the nervous system:* The diaphragm helps to regulate the nervous system, supporting relaxation and reducing stress.

*Diaphragm Breathwork:*

Diaphragm breathwork, also known as belly breathing, is a technique that engages the diaphragm to promote deep, relaxed breathing. This type of breathing has been shown to:

- *Reduce stress and anxiety:* Deep breathing can help to calm the nervous system and reduce stress hormones.
- *Improve sleep:* Deep breathing can help to relax the body and prepare it for sleep.
- *Increase oxygenation:* Deep breathing can help to increase oxygenation of the body, supporting healthy cellular function.

*Diaphragm Release Massage:*

Diaphragm release massage is a specialized technique that targets the diaphragm muscle to release tension and promote relaxation. This type of massage can help to:

- *Reduce stress and anxiety:* Releasing tension in the diaphragm can help to calm the nervous system and reduce stress hormones.
- *Improve breathing:* Releasing tension in the diaphragm can help to improve lung function and increase oxygenation.
- *Relieve digestive issues:* Releasing tension in the diaphragm can help to improve blood flow to the digestive organs, supporting healthy digestion.

*Find a Diaphragm Release Massage Therapist:*

If you're interested in trying diaphragm release massage, search for a licensed massage therapist in your area who specializes in this technique. You can also ask your healthcare provider for a referral.

*Conclusion:*

The diaphragm is a vital muscle that plays a crucial role in our overall health and wellbeing. By incorporating diaphragm breathwork and massage into your self-care routine, you can promote relaxation, reduce stress and anxiety, and support healthy bodily function. So take a deep breath, engage your diaphragm, and let the relaxation begin!

I hope you found this post informative and helpful! Let me know if you have any questions or need further clarification.

What is Active Isolated Stretching & why is it better than typical static stretching?

Here's a post highlighting the benefits of Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) over Static Stretching:

"Stretching Revamped! 🤸

Say goodbye to static stretching and hello to Active Isolated Stretching (AIS)! 🌟

AIS is a game-changer for improving flexibility, strength, and overall performance. Here's why:

*AIS vs. Static Stretching:*

- *Muscle Activation:* AIS activates the targeted muscle, while static stretching deactivates it.
- *Range of Motion:* AIS increases range of motion and flexibility, whereas static stretching can actually decrease it.
- *Strength:* AIS helps improve muscle strength, while static stretching can reduce it.
- *Injury Prevention:* AIS reduces muscle imbalances and improves joint stability, making it a superior choice for injury prevention.

*How AIS Works:*

1. *Identify the target muscle*
2. *Contract the opposing muscle*
3. *Lengthen the target muscle*
4. *Repeat for optimal results*

By incorporating AIS into your routine, you'll experience improved flexibility, enhanced athletic performance, and reduced risk of injury. Make the switch to Active Isolated Stretching today! "

Here's a post about the benefits of massage for the parasympathetic nervous system:

"Relaxation at its finest! 🤩

Did you know that massage can have a profound impact on your parasympathetic nervous system (PNS)? The PNS is responsible for promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and improving overall well-being.

Massage therapy has been shown to:

- Lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone)
- Increase oxytocin levels (the feel-good hormone)
- Slow down your heart rate and blood pressure
- Improve sleep quality
- Reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression

By stimulating the PNS, massage can help you feel more relaxed, centered, and at peace. So why not treat yourself to a massage and give your mind and body the TLC they deserve? 🤩

Craniosacral therapy (CST) may be beneficial in managing agoraphobia symptoms. CST is a gentle, non-invasive technique that targets the craniosacral system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, and sacrum. By releasing tension and restrictions in this system, CST can help:

1. Reduce anxiety and stress
2. Promote relaxation and calmness
3. Improve emotional regulation
4. Enhance sense of safety and security
5. Increase feelings of connection and grounding

Some ways CST may help agoraphobia specifically:

1. Reduces physical symptoms: CST can help alleviate physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat, trembling, and nausea associated with agoraphobia.
2. Addresses underlying trauma: CST can help process and release traumatic experiences that may contribute to agoraphobia.
3. Enhances emotional resilience: CST can increase emotional resilience, making it easier to cope with stressful situations.
4. Fosters sense of control: CST can help individuals feel more grounded and in control, reducing the overwhelming feelings associated with agoraphobia.
5. Complementary approach: CST can be used in conjunction with other therapies, like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), to enhance overall treatment outcomes.

While CST shows promise in alleviating agoraphobia symptoms, it's essential to work with a licensed therapist or certified craniosacral practitioner who has experience in anxiety and trauma treatment.

In my massage clinic I get this question almost weekly about referral pain:

"Why do I feel pain in another area when the problem is over here and not there? "

Referred pain, also known as referred sensation or radiating pain, is a phenomenon where pain is felt in a location other than the actual source of the pain. This occurs when nerves transmit pain signals from one area of the body to another, often through shared nerve pathways.

Why does referred pain happen?

1. Nerve convergence: Multiple nerves converge on a single spinal cord segment, making it difficult for the brain to pinpoint the exact pain location.
2. Nerve damage or irritation: Injury or inflammation can cause nerves to misfire, sending pain signals to nearby areas.
3. Central sensitization: The central nervous system becomes more sensitive, amplifying pain signals and causing referred pain.

Examples of referred pain:

1. Arm pain due to a heart attack (cardiac referral)
2. Leg pain from a herniated disc (sciatica)
3. Jaw pain from a heart attack or TMJ disorder
4. Abdominal pain from a kidney stone or gallbladder issue
5. Headaches from neck tension or migraines

How to diagnose referred pain:

1. Medical history and physical examination
2. Imaging tests (e.g., X-rays, MRI, CT scans)
3. Nerve blocks or injections to isolate the pain source

Treatment approaches:

1. Addressing the underlying cause (e.g., treating a herniated disc)
2. Pain management techniques (e.g., medication, physical therapy)
3. Alternative therapies (e.g., acupuncture, massage)

Remember, accurate diagnosis and treatment rely on a comprehensive understanding of referred pain mechanisms.

This class is designed to create a healing space that invites compassionate touch that's both mindful and artistic, heart opening and calming. We will combine breathwork with our movements which will be the driving focus of the work.

Super important: Bring a mat of some kind, such as a foam topper, a thick throw rug that's comfy to lie on, perhaps a plush gym mat. I like to bring pillows for people's neck and knees in case to make the receiver feel comfortable.

There will be plenty of time to practice in class once we learn how to embody the presence of the artform. I'll be available after class to answer any questions and specifics.

I'll provide super tasty organic snacks, tea and fruit for everyone!

I've been working on creating a after care room at my massage office. This room will be used to help people learn how to properly stretch, use equipment properly & perform exercises that can strengthen or stabilize target muscle groups to provide ultimate lasting relief. I also have cool gadgets to try out.I'm currently offering free posture assessments, gait training and stretching routines to all of my clients.

This room will also be a laboratory for
a Russian stretching device called a "pravilo"
which I'm currently building. This device allows a person to safely hang horizontally to both strengthen muscles, stretch joints and temper the entire body all at the same time.

Pravilo is beneficial if you train in martial arts, dance, sports, running, wish to develop a stronger yoga practice or post workout full body stretch. Contact me for more info to receive your 1st session on the house!
