The Florida House of Representatives has passed HB 63, Protection from Surgical Smoke, 115/1!

The proposal (HB 63), sponsored by Hollywood Democrat Rep. Marie Paule Woodson and Co- Sponsored by Miami Republican Rep. Alina Garcia and others, would require hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers to use a smoke evacuation system during procedures likely to generate surgical smoke by Jan. 1, 2025.

The surgical smoke contains harmful chemicals and particles that researchers have said can cause cancer cells to metastasize in the incision site of patients who undergo surgical cancer removal and also expose newborns to potentially hazardous substances in the case of C-section deliveries.

Currently, 15 states have enacted similar legislation mandating the use of surgical smoke evacuation systems.

An identical Senate companion measure (SB 410) unanimously passed its first of committee and is waiting to be heard in the Senate Fiscal Policy Committee. That bill is sponsored by Miami Republican Sen. Ileana Garcia and Co-Sponsored by Broward Democrat Senator Rosalind Osgood.
