And what’s scary is when people of color are diagnosed with skin cancer, it’s often in a later stage. In the case of melanoma – that can be deadly. In fact, reggae legend Bob Marley was diagnosed with a form of melanoma. He died from it in 1981 at the age of 36. He thought the dark spot under his toenail was a soccer injury. But it was cancer and eventually spread to other parts of his body. Skin Cancer Statistics for People With Dark Skin Tones: According to the Skin Cancer Foundation the estimated five-year survival rate for Blacks with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is 67 percent. In contrast, for whites it’s 92 percent. And the rate of melanoma has increased 20 percent in the past two decades for Hispanics. Some other statistics: Skin cancer represents one to two percent of all cancers in Blacks, two to four percent in Asians and four to five percent in Hispanics. Melanomas in people of color often occur in areas with little sun exposure. 60 to 75 percent of tumors are found on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet and around the nails. Black patients are more than three times more likely to be diagnosed with late-stage melanoma than non-Hispanic white patients. 52 percent of non-Hispanic Black patients and 26 percent of Hispanic patients are initially diagnosed with later stage melanoma.
