Red Wine and Your Gut-

Red wine is rich in polyphenols. Studies have found that the polyphenols were associated with changing and improving the types of bacteria found in the gut. In addition to improved gut health, it has been found people had improved blood pressure and lower inflammation compared to baseline or to those who consumed gin. Polyphenols also exist in dark chocolate, berries, red onions, artichokes, and tea — and may offer similar benefits.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD WINE? A quick overview.
#1: Smell - Even before you take a sip, stick your nose in the glass and take a whiff – does it smell like wine? Seriously, does it smell fruity or perhaps floral? If so, it’s passed the first test.
2 #: Balance - When a wine is in balance, none of the components of acidity, tannin, alcohol, or fruit stand out as the main event, it melds.
#3: Depth - Next, what are we tasting when you swirl it in your mouth? Not just crushed grapes, but can you detect a flavor beyond the fruit? Nutty, fruity or maybe a hint of chocolate, oak or coffee? Wines with depth are certainly candidates for a “good” wine. And finally,
#4: Finish - Maybe most easily way to determine if your wine is good is to consider its length or finish. You simply swallow the wine and see how long the flavor lasts on your palate – the longer it lingers, the better the wine.

Alcohol Helps You Speak Foreign Languages Better -

Scientists from the King’s College London, Maastricht University and University of Liverpool, have determined that low portions of liquor can, truth be told, enable your tongue to extricate up.

The group tried to see what impact a low portion of liquor would have on 50 German understudies trying to learn Dutch. In a blind study, participants were arbitrarily appointed to one of two gatherings. The first were given a low portion of liquor to drink, while the control aggregate got a non-mixed refreshment. Liquor dosages also were based on body size. A short time later, every member was requested to hold a discussion with a local Dutch speaker for a couple of minutes. For more on this go to:

According to a recent study at UC Irvine Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders, people who drink moderate amounts of alcohol or coffee AND are overweight in their 70s live longer lives.

In 2003, they began to look at what makes people live past 90, and they found that those participants who drank moderate amounts of alcohol or coffee lived longer than those who abstained from either drink. Plus, people who were overweight in their 70s lived longer than people who were normal or underweight in their 70s.

CONGRATULATIONS TO CALVIN AND LINDA
My wife has been training Calvin, our "mass catastrophe" working dog for the last year. Calvin, who by the way was a rescue dog, is a 110 lb., 5-year-old Golden Retriever, and has been trained to support First Responders. These dogs are called “Hope Dogs” and there only 300 in the US.

On Tuesday, Linda and Calvin were deployed by CalFire to go to the fire headquarters 200 miles north of LA, and will be gone for undetermined days supporting their teams. I am so proud.
