The Revenue Act of June 30, 1864, stands as a landmark piece of legislation, empowering the Commissioner of Internal Revenue with far-reaching authority. Among its provisions, the Act authorized the Commissioner to compromise all suits "relating to internal revenue," signaling a commitment to administrative flexibility and pragmatism in the face of evolving circumstances.

Moreover, the Act granted the Commissioner the authority to abate outstanding assessments and to refund taxes in accordance with prevailing regulations. This newfound power represented a significant departure from previous practices, reflecting a government's willingness to adapt and respond to the needs of its citizens.

Taxes must be paid as you earn or receive income during the year, either through withholding or estimated tax payments. If you do not have enough taxes withheld, than you would use estimated tax payments to bridge that gap. They are paid on a quarterly basis, and the amount can change from quarter to quarter, since oftentimes, your income can change from quarter to quarter.

Estimated tax is paid when a taxpayer, including individuals, corporation shareholders, and sole proprietors, expects to owe more than $1,000 when their return is filed. FAS offers strategy meetings throughout the year to help our clients calculate whether they should make these payments and will also go through your numbers to see if there are any strategies to help lower the expected tax liability.

Clients who do not make these estimated payments may receive a notice from the IRS or state tax boards with a penalty from not making these estimated payments. If you receive one of these notices, feel free to send them our way so we can review and advise from there. We would also like to encourage our clients to give us a call to schedule a strategy meeting to help avoid these penalties in the future.
