World Sands and a $40 Microscope
I am a geomorphologist who studies how rocks decay. Sand is the end product! AND it could access your phone camera to take photos!!
World Sands and a $40 Microscope was born from the need for microscopes in my geoscience class that could handle a rock on the stage. Biology was not interested in loaning their dissecting scopes to Geo, and Geo could not afford new scopes - so I found a $10 clip on scope that could magnify up to 60x - better than a loupe! I still use this little scope (it has challenges with cameras that have mor
La Parguera, Lajas Puerto Rico USA Commonwealth: This sand came from the shallows in the bay where tour boats take people to swim as the sun goes down and before they go into the nearby bioluminescence bay. There are 5 bioluminescence bays in the world and 3 of them are in Puerto Rico. The one at La Parguera allows motorized boats and you can swim there. The population of dinoflagellates is diminished because of this activity, but the sparkly single-cell organisms are still in the protected bay. The sand here is almost entirely shells. It was also stinky!
St. Augustine, FL USA beach sand: This sand is almost entirely quartz sand grains and shells. High quartz concentration in sands indicate that all of the other minerals have eroded away. Some have become tiny clays and may eventually become mudstone, some have blown away in the wind. The shells on this beach make the sand look orangey-yellow and it feels a bit coarse. There are a few other minerals mixed in, but quartz dominates. (Note: I don't actually remember the name of this beach, but it was between St. Augustine and the Port Orange...)
Welcome to World Sands and a $40 Microscope. I also have a $10 microscope that clips on, but it has difficult if your phone has more than two camera lenses. The $40 scope "talks" to your phone through wifi and you can take pictures on the spot. I hope you enjoy the micro-world of world sands!
Pismo Beach, CA USA: The sand at this beach is filled with a variety of very angular but even sized minerals. Although there are some shell fragments, the sand is dominated by minerals.
