#ASUEngineering Associate Professor Kristen Parrish is receiving a $9 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy to lead a project in partnership with the Hopi Tribe and BoxPower.
The goal is to provide electricity to 300 tribal homes in rural Hopi and Navajo communities with solar-powered, battery-based systems. As a result of this project, the community's municipal complex will gain reliable power optimized for 24/7 operation, enabling critical community services like IT and health services.
The new project will provide learning opportunities for the Hopi Nation as they design, build and operate a microgrid. If successful, solar microgrids with battery storage will offer a solution for more reliable, cleaner electricity.
