Pearl Anna Neal graduated from Howard University Conservatory of Music and did graduate work in music at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music in New York. She ultimately earned a master’s degree in music from Columbia University, the first black woman to do so. Her passion for music led to her teaching in Winston-Salem, North Carolina public schools. She served as director of seniors majoring in music at Teachers College in Winston Salem.

“The Center for Disease Control found that Black children, on average, are diagnosed with Autism at a much older age than White or Hispanic children. As a result, Black children are also twice as likely to be diagnosed with an intellectual disability. When a diagnosis of autism is received, Black children have poorer access to critical services to address their symptoms. These factors, combined with the behaviors which originally led to the first office visit, create a scenario in which Black children with Autism are perceived as “difficult” or,” behavior problems”.

This presentation will discuss the process of rewriting the narrative for Black children with autism, with practical and experiential knowledge.”
