FORD MUSTANG Drak Horse
By CGI Artist Dany Bullet
In July, we were excited to announce an exciting collaboration with Autodesk VRED . As we shared, you can now access several of our professional 3D scenes right within VRED, and we’re offering five VRED scenes to download for free via our website.
These scenes give professional 3D designers the tools they need to create compelling automotive renders, with our RAY.HDRi technology providing accurate lighting and visuals.
Designers are already leveraging this new tool!
Our July artist of the month is Dany Bullet of VRED Professional Renders. On his Behance page , Bullet shared beautiful renders of the 2024 Mustang Dark Horse created using one of our new VRED 3D scenes.
Bullet’s renders showcase this dramatic and powerful American muscle car tackling the corners of a race track, as captured in our free Race Track scene.
The late evening lighting of the scene–with magic hour sunlight gently illuminating the dramatic mountains in the rear of the shots–perfectly captures the visual concept of the Dark Horse branding.
And of course, the racetrack location is the ideal place to showcase the Dark Horse, which is designed to push performance to the max, relative to other Mustang models.
Bullet cleverly creates a variety of renders within the scene by strategically positioning his vehicle digital twin.
In one shot, the highly-directional rear lights of the Dark Horse form an arrow that meshes perfectly with the arrow-like markings on the racetrack’s barriers, as well as the movement of the vehicle itself.
These visual details suggest speed and high-performance handling, and the darker lighting highlights the Dark Horse’s lights perfectly.
Bullet raves about our RAY.HDRi Map format and our new digital scenes. His advice to other designers is simply, “You really want to test the Ray files,” which he says allow for independent “lighting between your 3D object and the HDR.”
Congrats to Bullet on earning our July 2024 Artist of the Month designation! Want to try our free VRED 3D scenes for yourself? Learn more and download them here.

Light and Life in Japan
If we didn’t have light, we couldn’t see. But this doesn’t mean people pay attention to light. We take it for granted because it’s always at our fingertips, force-fed to us, or in extreme cases - comes alive if we know how to make it.
But light is what gives the world and all objects in it their shape and is the fuel for most of what is in our minds.
Tokyo is a city that never sleeps, and its light is the heartbeat that keeps it alive. I’ve seen many places, but nothing quite like the way Tokyo lights up. It’s a place where light isn’t just there to see by, it’s there to feel. It’s raw, and it’s real.

Awesome CGI Work by Carlos Pecino A.K.A Carlos Color Sponge, ASH THORP and Makehastecorp
Make Haste, a design group led by Carlos Pecino Albornoz (who goes by Colorsponge) and Ash Thorpe, recently released a brilliant series of renders of a vehicle they call 'The Xterminator'.
The Xterminator project is a celebration of the 1968 Plymouth GTX, an iconic American muscle car. Colorsponge says “embarking on this design journey, my vision was to breathe new life into the GTX and endow it with a voice that is refreshingly distinctive.”
American muscle cars are all about raw power, sensation, and sound. In creating renders of The Xterminator, Colorsponge used RAY.HDRi Maps from our collection that are gritty, authentic, and minimalist. This perfectly captures the ethos of American muscle cars.
Colorsponge's main render of The Xterminator shows the vehicle on a track with a stack of tires in soft focus in the foreground, and a series of mobile homes behind a concrete barrier in the background.
This render gives the impression that the viewer is peeking over a barrier at the edge of a racetrack toward the vehicle.
It’s an authentic and informal view, a perfect fit for the accessibility of muscle cars like the GTX. The render feels like it could be a cellphone photo– as if the viewer was walking around the track and happened upon this stunning, jet-black vehicle.
Colorsponge carries this aesthetic through in their other work, with detailed views captured in informal settings. Stark reflections in their 3D renders suggest images taken at high noon, with aggressive shadows mirroring the aggressive lines of the vehicle.
The fact that Colorsponge was able to achieve this is a testament to the versatility of our RAY.HDRi Maps and backplates.
You can take your vehicle to a beautifully lit street scene in Paris, but you can also use our collection to emphasize a different side of the motoring world, focused on raw power, authenticity, and accessibility of muscle cars.
“CGIBACKGROUNDS.COM is truly a game changer for our workflow using the amazing RAY.HDRi assets”, Colorsponge says. “Really impressed with the results they have. It’s just drag and drop!! I love them!"
No matter what you’re creating, CGI.Backgrounds is here to help. Want to use our industry-leading RAY.HDRi Maps and backplates in your own projects? Reach out to us or check out our plans and pricing page.

Testing Midjourney's New Character References for Automotive Rendering
As we've explored in detail before , AI can be a powerful tool for creating 3D renders and exploring concepts.
The challenge with directly creating 3D renders using generative AI tools like Midjourney or DALL·E, however, has always been in their lack of specificity.
As we've explored, you can easily ask a system like Midjourney to create a render of a vehicle in New York City, or another common automotive rendering theme. It will create a dramatic and fairly realistic render.
The vehicle that it creates, however, generally looks nothing like any actual vehicle on the market. It’s often an amalgam of parts from different cars, combined with Midjourney's own hallucinations.
That makes it hard to use the output from these systems for anything other than ideation. Even demonstrating a concept using a vehicle that looks similar to a client product, for example, is nearly impossible.
A new addition to today's most powerful AI generator may soon change that.
The Launch of Character References
Last month, Midjourney Version 6 rolled out a powerful new feature called character references. The goal of this feature was to allow illustrators to preserve a consistent character between images when using the AI generator.
A children’s book illustrator, for example, could create a character once. They could then reuse that character in multiple additional images to illustrate an entire book with a consistent look and feel.
The feature is tuned specifically to duplicate the appearance of people or human-like characters. But we wondered whether the same feature could also be used to preserve the feel of a vehicle between generated automotive renders.
Testing Character References for Automotive Rendering
For our test, we used Midjourney Version 6, which is the most up-to-date version of the AI image generator. We asked for a scene of a Porsche on a coastal road, which is a common automotive rendering request.
