Coming this summer...
The Painter’s Path II – Abstract Painting at the Edge of the World is the second series of four weekly Zoom talks offered through that advances inquiry and reflection that is primarily focused on The Image in abstract painting.
Drawing upon a number of knowledge domains including mythology, literary and poetic imagination, philosophy and psychology, religion and art, participants will see image-making as part of an ancient taproot that descends downward in themselves as well as outward toward an ensouled world. The possibility to discover their own embedded images as well as new models for creating frameworks beyond any disciplinary perspective.
I hope you can join me!

My daughter who lives in Boston was able to catch the show with work by including this gorgeous piece.
I was honored to judge The Unknown Nature of Being, a national show, at the Tubac Center of the
Arts. Over 200 entries from across the U.S. in all mediums exploring the interconnectedness of living things from microbe to cosmos.
New work on paper.
"Loom of Origins"
Acrylic on paper
22" X 30"
Found three carvings I did years ago from stones in the back yard.
These simple aniconic pieces dilate my consciousness with whirlwind sensations, becoming permeable to all things and the universe.
Showing my grandson around the studio.
Another one of Josh's creations from last week.
"Come, You Shall Dwell"
Acrylic on paper
22" X 30"
Recently completed two works on paper. Feels good to be back in the studio.
"Red Harvest"
22"x30"
Acrylic on paper
"Nightwatch"
22"x30"
Acrylic on paper

"Breathing Over Water"
Image size: 4.25" x 4.75"
Ink, acrylic, selected trash
A quick, non-thinking, non-linear process drawing. A mini-imago to feed the fires of intellect and soul.
"The Betweens"
Painting with collage on paper
Image size: 6.75" x 12.75"
Pulling out scraps for a potential collage and tossing them on the floor of my studio, I notice two very different scraps of paper. One has paint on it, the other is a torn fragment of a photo covered with paint. Is a juxtaposition possible? I move the two fragments around trying to establish a connection. There! That is it! I glue one on top of the other. Effortless is the way the universe works.
My painting, Nocturne, is on display at Tucson Medical Center through its Healing Art Program and included in the works highlighted in its Summer 2021 newsletter.
The Healing Art Program was established in 2014 to help patients heal with surroundings that inspire, encourage and cheer. Now artwork has been extended to internal spaces, too, like the SIM lab, to benefit staff who work so hard.
Research shows that art in hospitals makes everyone feel better - reducing pain and anxiety, and often shortening hospital stays.
Each abstract painter is capable of grasping the inner complexities of their work. However, deeply articulating what they are seeing requires guidance and practice. Join me in a five-part online course, "Self-Interrogations: Abstract Painting Critiques with Josh Goldberg." The course is offered through Priya Vadhyar's Studio/ Line of Sight, which offers immersive art workshops taught by experienced practicing artists. Registration for my class is open until September 21. https://studiolineofsight.com/workshops/p/self-interrogationsabstractpaintingcritiquesjoshgoldberg
Self-Interrogations: Abstract Painting Critiques with Josh Goldberg — Studio/ Line of Sight An Abstract Painting Critique workshop taught by Josh Goldberg
Just completed my "Sweet Petite Suite" of 20 small oil sketches.
Each one was done in less than 5 minutes, 8 the larger ones.
No thought, only process counted. No revision. Haiku-like, they are the fibers of darkness and weeping light but also the quiet air that is the pure center of waterless waves. I will mount them individually after they dry.
"On This Day, In This World"
30" x 22"
Charcoal, ink, chalk on paper
I like the contrast of the top half that is motionless, very quiet, and it's opposite at the bottom that rushes across the surface from left to right. Also, what seems like bird's eye views of landscape fragments. In the process of working they appear and guide my way in all of my drawings, in particular, but haunt my paintings and prints as well. There is something "ancient" about the process as well as the imagery. I feel I am grasping at the tail of a fleeting profundity.
"The World Inside Out"
30" x 22"
Charcoal, ink, chalk on paper
The extended mind goes into the world a refective and meta-consciousness. We cannot see the world as it is in itself. We just assume we see it. Looking nothing like it really is, what we see is an interface, a representation. That is why we need imagination. It is the annunciation, the high shining gate and the thousand and one dreams.
"A Land Darkly Imagined"
Chalk and charcoal on paper
22" x 30"
The archetypal imagination at work in all it's unfathomable and polymorphous nature. Not something pre-established but a horizon exploded without end. A leap into a vaster circle revealing not what things are but how they are.
Finally, rain in Tucson.
"Light Daydreaming on a Rainy Day"
Acrylic on paper, 22"x30"
And a haiku:
after rain lightning -
torn vines
blink from darkness
An ink drawing done between household chores. Anita Goldberg sees our old cat, Sushi, in this image! What do you see?
"Even A Stone's Existence Begins as the Name of God"
Ink with light coloring
Image size: 9.75" x 9.50"
