Thank you to everyone who attended the 8th annual Inclusion Summit hosted by ANEW!

Thank you to Simone Bullinger and Dr. Keith Dempsey for kicking the day off and setting the mood with the rapping skills and bringing so much wisdom and guidance for the Psychological Safety workshop. Thank you to all our presenters and partners who put so much time and thought into the breakout sessions and to the Washington State Building Trades Diversity Committee for showing up and guiding the conversation for our partners and field workers on best practices, what’s next and to celebrate the WINS!

Huge thank you to ANEW's very own Megan Pearson for putting so much work and effort into making this summit possible - we love you Megan!

ANEW will be hosting a fall conference that will be taking the content from the panels and creating longer workshops and more time for those valuable conversations and the goal is to create some “took kits” for attendee’s to take back to their organizations and help with the implementation of existing systems or creating new ones. We will also be focusing on the leadership component…intentionally promoting and creating pathways for women and BIPOC into the leadership roles!

Look out for a survey soon for your feedback - if you haven't already, sign up for ANEW's newsletter - link below. Your feedback is what helps us grow and continue to support our goal of shifting the culture of construction to one that is more inclusive, diverse, and equitable!

Reposted from National Partnership for Women & Families

"House Republican leaders are working against the best interests of working families and threatening a government shutdown if they don’t get their way. But making drastic cuts to critical programs to support working families, House Republicans’ funding proposals would undermine workers’ rights and the ability for women to thrive in the workplace. Additionally, their funding proposal aims to further restrict access to abortion and reproductive health services by severely hampering the federal governments’ ability to cover and support abortion care – restrictions that will hurt low-income women and women of color the most, as well as young people, immigrants, people with disabilities, and those living in rural areas."

Last week RISE-Up held our first ever Introductory Blueprint Reading class and it was such a huge success! The class was lef by one of RISE-Up's Ambassador's Allison Adams, who is apart of the Sheetmetal Union Local66. She did such an excellent job going over the basics of reading blueprints, showing the class how to read a blueprint ruler, as well as taking the class around ANEW'S Tukwilla learning center and having them scale and draw out a room!

Thank you to our partners at the City of Seattle for joining RISE Up 4 Equity, in shifting the culture of construction to one that is inclusive to all people one individual, organization, or site at a time.

The City of Seattle has implemented stringent standards for acceptable behavior on City construction work sites that prohibit bullying, hazing, and related behaviors—particularly those based upon race, immigrant status, religious affiliation, gender identity, or sexual orientation. Contractors of each tier must ensure an appropriate, productive, and safe environment for all workers.

September is National Su***de Prevention Month, when it comes to preventing su***de, the idea of where to start can be overwhelming.

You know the dangers that come from working on a job site, we talk about them often during
Toolbox Talks, but what about those that lurk when you’re off the job?

Su***de is one of our industry’s “best-kept secrets,” and it’s killing us. Literally.

BY THE NUMBERS

– In multiple years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found construction and extraction was
the no. 1 occupational group with male su***des (15% in 2012, 16% in 2015)

– In the general population, su***de occurs in 27 out of every 100,000 people. In construction, the number
is closer to 53 su***des per 100,000 workers.

– In the U.S., a construction worker dies by su***de once every 12 minutes. Another way to look at it:
123 of us die from su***de each day.

WHY IT MATTERS

September is Su***de Awareness Month, and Sept. 5-9 was Construction Su***de Prevention Week, so we
want to do everything in our power to help save our fellow teammates.

We’ll be sharing
tools and resources to stamp out the stigma of asking for help, and possibly help save some lives in
the meantime.

GOOD TO KNOW

– National Su***de Prevention Lifeline: 800-273-TALK (8255)
– As of July 16, you can also call, text, or chat 988 to reach the lifeline’s trained counselors directly.
