In the first half of this week’s program, we’ll celebrate the music of the great Malian kora maestro Toumani Diabaté, who died on July 19th at the age of 58. You’ll hear a variety of recordings from throughout his incredibly productive career during which he helped introduce the kora into a variety of new musical settings with artists from around the world. Toumani had a profound influence on kora playing over the past 35 years and his musical artistry will be dearly missed.
The second half of this week’s show also features several tracks that came to me from recommendations by others. My brother Brian and his friend Ray - a gypsy jazz guitar player - pointed me to the music of jazz manouche guitarist Dorado Schmitt. Fellow Public Radio Tulsa DJ Scott Gregory - host of All This Jazz - turned me on to the very cool 1972 album ‘Expresso 2222’ by the great Brazilian singer-songwriter Gilberto Gil. And my friend Jared Johnson - a music educator and jazz drummer - told me that he uses the joyously uplifting 1971 song “Woyaya” by Afro-Rock band Osibisa in rhythm classes with his students. Thanks to all of them for sharing this new music with me! I hope you can tune in…
