I often get asked: “How can I strengthen my abs that won’t cause pain in my back?” This is the best one I have found so far and it’s simply a modification to dead bug. The main focus here is to lift the head and squeeze your abs while moving the weights. Since the legs are supported, it will flatten the low back and consequently support the low back as well. This exercise is targeting upper back, mid-back and shoulders, it will help increase mobility and decrease tightness and pain. You can do repetitive movements or roll out and hold for 30 seconds to a minute. If you’re having trouble this way, rest arms on your bed and drop head and shoulders instead and work up to the foam roller. The popping or cracking sound often heard during a chiropractic adjustment is typically caused by the release of gas (mostly nitrogen) bubbles that are trapped in the synovial fluid within the joints. When the joint is manipulated, the pressure changes within the joint space, causing these bubbles to “pop” or collapse, creating the audible sound. This phenomenon is called cavitation. This is reverse hyperextensions. Doing these will improve strength in your low back, glutes, hamstrings and abs. Make sure you have something to hold onto and engage your core before extending the legs. Take your time, these movements should be slow and controlled. If this is too much, start with alternating single leg extensions.
