Douay-Rheims

Ecclesiasticus (Sirach) 36: 1 - 16

A prayer for the church of God. Of a good heart, and a good wife.

[1] Have mercy upon us, O God of all, and behold us, and shew us the light of thy mercies: [2] And send thy fear upon the nations, that have not sought after thee: that they may know that there is no God beside thee, and that they may shew forth thy wonders. [3] Lift up thy hand over the strange nations, that they may see thy power. [4] For as thou hast been sanctified in us in their sight, so thou shalt be magnified among them in our presence, [5] That they may know thee, as we also have known thee, that there is no God beside thee, O Lord.

[6] Renew thy signs, and work new miracles. [7] Glorify thy hand, and thy right arm. [8] Raise up indignation, and pour out wrath. [9] Take away the adversary, and crush the enemy. [10] Hasten the time, and remember the end, that they may declare thy wonderful works.

[11] Let him that escapeth be consumed by the rage of the fire: and let them perish that oppress thy people. [12] Crush the head of the princes of the enemies that say: There is no other beside us. [13] Gather together all the tribes of Jacob: that they may know that there is no God besides thee, and may declare thy great works: and thou shalt inherit them as from the beginning. [14] Have mercy on thy people, upon whom thy name is invoked: and upon Israel, whom thou hast raised up to be thy firstborn. [15] Have mercy on Jerusalem, the city which thou hast sanctified, the city of thy rest.

[16] Fill Sion with thy unspeakable words, and thy people with thy glory.

Psalm 26 (27)

Dominus illuminatio. David's faith and hope in God.
.. [1] The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the protector of my life: of whom shall I be afraid? ... [2] Whilst the wicked draw near against me, to eat my flesh. My enemies that trouble me, have themselves been weakened, and have fallen. ... [3] If armies in camp should stand together against me, my heart shall not fear. If a battle should rise up against me, in this will I be confident. ... [4] One thing I have asked of the Lord, this will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. That I may see the delight of the Lord, and may visit his temple. ... [5] For he hath hidden me in his tabernacle; in the day of evils, he hath protected me in the secret place of his tabernacle.
.. [6] He hath exalted me upon a rock: and now he hath lifted up my head above my enemies. I have gone round, and have offered up in his tabernacle a sacrifice of jubilation: I will sing, and recite a psalm to the Lord. ... [7] Hear, O Lord, my voice, with which I have cried to thee: have mercy on me and hear me. ... [8] My heart hath said to thee: My face hath sought thee: thy face, O Lord, will I still seek. ... [9] Turn not away thy face from me; decline not in thy wrath from thy servant. Be thou my helper, forsake me not; do not thou despise me, O God my Saviour. ... [10] For my father and my mother have left me: but the Lord hath taken me up.
.. [11] Set me, O Lord, a law in thy way, and guide me in the right path, because of my enemies. ... [12] Deliver me not over to the will of them that trouble me; for unjust witnesses have risen up against me; and iniquity hath lied to itself. ... [13] I believe to see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living. ... [14] Expect the Lord, do manfully, and let thy heart take courage, and wait thou for the Lord.

Jn 14:15 - 25
[15] If you love me, keep my commandments.

[16] And I will ask the Father, and he shall give you another Paraclete, that he may abide with you for ever. [17] The spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, nor knoweth him: but you shall know him; because he shall abide with you, and shall be in you. [18] I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you. [19] Yet a little while: and the world seeth me no more. But you see me: because I live, and you shall live. [20] In that day you shall know, that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.

[21] He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them; he it is that loveth me. And he that loveth me, shall be loved of my Father: and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. [22] Judas saith to him, not the Iscariot: Lord, how is it, that thou wilt manifest thyself to us, and not to the world? [23] Jesus answered, and said to him: If any one love me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and will make our abode with him. [24] He that loveth me not, keepeth not my words. And the word which you have heard, is not mine; but the Father's who sent me. [25] These things have I spoken to you, abiding with you.

R: And let my cry come unto Thee.

✠✠ Let us pray. O GOD, our refuge and our strength, look down in mercy upon Thy people who cry to Thee; and by the intercession of the Glorious and Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of St. Joseph her most chaste Spouse, of St. Michael the Archangel, of Thy Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and of all Thy Saints, in mercy and goodness hear our prayers for the conversion of sinners, and for the liberty an exaltation of our holy Mother the Church. Through the same Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the Unity of the Holy Ghost, God forever and ever.

Tobias 13:3-23
Give glory to the Lord, ye children of Israel, and praise him in the sight of the Gentiles: Because he hath therefore scattered you among the Gentiles, who know not him, that you may declare his wonderful works, and make them know that there is no other almighty God besides him. He hath chastised us for our iniquities: and he will save us for his own mercy.
See then what he hath done with us, and with fear and trembling give ye glory to him: and extol the eternal King of worlds in your works. As for me, I will praise him in the land of my captivity: because he hath shewn his majesty toward a sinful nation. Be converted therefore, ye sinners, and do justice before God, believing that he will shew his mercy to you. And I and my soul will rejoice in him. Bless ye the Lord, all his elect, keep days of joy, and give glory to him.
Jerusalem, city of God, the Lord hath chastised thee for the works of thy hands. Give glory to the Lord for thy good things, and bless the God eternal, that he may rebuild his tabernacle in thee, and may call back all the captives to thee, and thou mayst rejoice for ever and ever. Thou shalt shine with a glorious light: and all the ends of the earth shall worship thee. Nations from afar shall come to thee: and shall bring gifts, and shall adore the Lord in thee, and shall esteem thy land as holy. For they shall call upon the great name in thee.
They shall be cursed that shall despise thee: and they shall be condemned that shall blaspheme thee: and blessed shall they be that shall build thee up. But thou shalt rejoice in thy children, because they shall all be blessed, and shall be gathered together to the Lord.
Blessed are all they that love thee, and that rejoice in thy peace. My soul, bless thou the Lord, because the Lord our God hath delivered Jerusalem his city from all her troubles. Happy shall I be if there shall remain of my seed, to see the glory of Jerusalem.
The gates of Jerusalem shall be built of sapphire, and of emerald, and all the walls thereof round about of precious stones. All its streets shall be paved with white and clean stones: and Alleluia shall be sung in its streets. Blessed be the Lord, who hath exalted it, and may he reign over it for ever and ever, Amen.

ROMAN MARTYROLOGY

July 25th

This Day, the Twenty-Fifth Day of July

St. James the Apostle, brother of the blessed evangelist John, who was beheaded by Herod Agrippa about the feast of Easter. His sacred bones were on this day carried from Jerusalem to Spain, and placed in the remote province of Galicia, where they are devoutly honored by the far-famed piety of the inhabitants, and the frequent concourse of Christians, who visit them through piety and in fulfillment of their vows.

In Lycia, in the time of Decius, St. Christopher, martyr. Being scourged with iron rods, cast into the flames, from which he was saved by the power of Christ, and finally transfixed with arrows and beheaded, he completed his martyrdom.

At Barcelona, in Spain, during the persecution of Diocletian and under the governor Dacian, the birthday of the holy martyr Cucuphas. After overcoming many torments, he was struck with the sword, and thus went triumphantly to Heaven.

In Palestine, St. Paul, a martyr, in the persecution of Maximian Galerius, and under the governor Firmilian. He was condemned to capital punishment, but having obtained a short respite to pray, he besought God with all his heart, first for his own countrymen, then for the Jews and the Gentiles, that they might embrace the true faith, next for the multitude of the spectators, and finally for the judge who had condemned him and the executioner that was to strike him; after which he received the crown of martyrdom by being beheaded.

In the same country, St. Valentina, a virgin, who was led to an altar to offer sacrifice, but overturning it with her foot, she was cruelly tortured, and being cast into the fire with another virgin, her companion, she went to her spouse.

At Forcono, in Abruzzo, the holy martyrs Florentius and Felix, natives of Sipontum.

At Cordova, St. Theodemirus, monk and martyr.

At Treves, St. Magnericus, bishop and confessor.

And elsewhere in divers places, many other holy martyrs, confessors, and holy virgins.

Omnes sancti Mártyres, oráte pro nobis. ("All ye Holy Martyrs, pray for us", from the Litaniae Sanctorum, the Litany of the Saints)

Response: Thanks be to God.

ROMAN MARTYROLOGY

July 20th

This Day, the Twentieth Day of July

At Antioch, St. Margaret, virgin and martyr.

On Mount Carmel, the holy prophet Elias.

The same day, the birthday of blessed Joseph, surnamed the Just, whom the Apostles selected with blessed Matthias for the Apostleship, in the place of the traitor Judas. The lot having fallen upon Matthias, Joseph, notwithstanding, continued to preach and to advance in virtue, and after having sustained from the Jews many persecutions for the faith of Christ, happily ended his life in Judea. It is related of him that having drunk poison, he received no injury from it, because of his confidence in the Lord.

At Damascus, the holy martyrs Sabinus, Julian, Maximus, Macrobius, Cassia, and Paula, with ten others.

At Cordova, St. Paul, deacon and martyr. For rebuking Muslim princes for their impiety and cruelty, and preaching Christ courageously, he was put to death, and went to his reward in Heaven.

At Boulogne, in France, the abbot St. Wulmar, a man of admirable sanctity.

That God may take His Justuce upon the persecutors of His people:

Psalm 7

Domine, Deus meus. David, trusting in the justice of his cause, prayeth for God's help against his enemies.

[1] The psalm of David which he sung to the Lord for the words of Chusi the son of Jemini.
[2] O Lord my God, in thee have I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me.
[3] Lest at any time he seize upon my soul like a lion, while there is no one to redeem me, nor to save.
[4] O Lord my God, if I have done this thing, if there be iniquity in my hands:
[5] If I have rendered to them that repaid me evils, let me deservedly fall empty before my enemies.
[6] Let the enemy pursue my soul, and take it, and tread down my life on the earth, and bring down my glory to the dust.
[7] Rise up, O Lord, in thy anger: and be thou exalted in the borders of my enemies. And arise, O Lord my God, in the precept which thou hast commanded:
[8] And a congregation of people shall surround thee. And for their sakes return thou on high.
[9] The Lord judgeth the people. Judge me, O Lord, according to my justice, and according to my innocence in me.
[10] The wickedness of sinners shall be brought to nought: and thou shalt direct the just: the searcher of hearts and reins is God.
[11] Just is my help from the Lord: who saveth the upright of heart.
[12] God is a just judge, strong and patient: is he angry every day?
[13] Except you will be converted, he will brandish his sword: he hath bent his bow and made it ready. [14] And in it he hath prepared the instruments of death, he hath made ready his arrows for them that burn.
[15] Behold he hath been in labour with injustice; he hath conceived sorrow, and brought forth iniquity.
[16] He hath opened a pit and dug it; and he is fallen into the hole he made.
[17] His sorrow shall be turned on his own head: and his iniquity shall come down upon his crown.
[18] I will give glory to the Lord according to his justice: and will sing to the name of the Lord the most high.

Heroic Virtue. St. Theodosia was a nun zealous for God and for souls. When the emperor ordered holy icons taken down and destroyed (sound familiar?) she stopped a soldier from destroying an icon of Christ that had stood over the city gate for 400 years by knocking him off a ladder. She was martyred by having a rams horn driven through her neck.

The Virgin Martyr Theodosia of Constantinople lived during the eighth century. She was born in answer to the fervent prayers of her parents. After their death, she was raised at the women’s monastery of the holy Martyr Anastasia in Constantinople. St Theodosia became a nun after she distributed to the poor of what remained of her parental inheritance. She used part of the money to commission gold and silver icons of the Savior, the Theotokos, and St Anastasia.

When Leo the Isaurian (717-741) ascended the imperial throne, he issued an edict to destroy holy icons everywhere. Above the Bronze Gates at Constantinople was a bronze icon of the Savior, which had been there for more than 400 years. In 730, the iconoclast Patriarch Anastasius ordered the icon removed.

The Virgin Martyr Theodosia and other women rushed to protect the icon and toppled the ladder with the soldier who was carrying out the command. Then they stoned the impious Patriarch Anastasius, and Emperor Leo ordered soldiers to behead the women. St Theodosia, an ardent defender of icons, was locked up in prison. For a week they gave her a hundred lashes each day. On the eighth day, they led her about the city, fiercely beating her along the way. One of the soldiers stabbed the nun in the throat with a ram’s horn, and she received the crown of martyrdom.

The body of the holy virgin martyr was reverently buried by Christians in the monastery of St Euphemia in Constantinople, near a place called Dexiokratis. The tomb of St Theodosia was glorified by numerous healings of the sick.

Act of Consecration to Our Lady of Mount Carmel
mount carmel

O Mary, Queen and Mother of Carmel, I come today to consecrate myself to Thee, for my whole life is but a small return for the many graces and blessings that have from God to me through Thy hands.

Since Thou regardest with an eye of special kindness those who wear Thy Scapular I implore Thee to strengthen my weakness with Thy power, to enlighten the darkness of my mind with Thy wisdom, to increase in me faith, hope and charity that I may render, day by day, my debt of humble homage to Thee.

May Thy Scapular keep Thine eyes of mercy turned towards me and bring me Thy special protection in the daily struggle to be faithful to Thy Divine Son and to Thee.

May it separate me from all that is sinful in life and remind me constantly of my duty to behold Thee and clothe myself with Thy virtues. From henceforth I shall strive to live in the sweet companionship of Thy spirit, to offer all to Jesus through Thee and make my life the mirror of Thy humility, charity, patience, meekness and prayerfulness.

O dearest Mother, support me, by Thy never-failing love that I, and unworthy sinner, may come one day to exchange Thy Scapular for the wedding Garment of heaven and dwell with Thee and the saints of Carmel in the kingdom of Thy Son. Amen.

Prayer to Our Lady of Mount Carmel

O most beautiful Flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in this my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein that you are my Mother.

O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart, to succor me in this my necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. O show me herein that you are my Mother.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us that have recourse to thee. (3 times)

Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands. (3 times)
