Tiny new studio friends have arrived! I don't have the heart to tell them that they're a bit too early for Halloween celebrations...

Even Artist's Block Has Value I hate artist's block, and will always hate it. However, I do have to admit that the ensnaring gyre of creative lethargy, and self doubt that make up artist's block have sometimes served a purpose in my artistic life. In my attempts to "swim sideways" and escape the current that has me trapped, I ha...
Don't miss out! Only 10 prints will be available!

After a few color studies, I still wasn't sure that I was ready to tackle the Borzoi in oils.
So, I've transferred my drawing to another panel, and I'm playing around in acrylics. I'm really liking the lost, and found edges that are happening here. I'll definitely apply that to the oil painting later.
Now I need to vacate the studio. I applied the first coat of varnish to the skull painting, and the fumes are getting heavy!
After hiding from this painting for over a year, I've touched up the final details, and am calling it... Done!
This is a step forward in my quest to stop trying to achieve perfect (perfect isn't conducive to creativity for me) and accept when a painting is "enough."
Here's a helpful little trick. If you're looking to speed up the color study process, just print out multiple miniatures of a photo, or scan of your original drawing!
The Borzoi decided that a little more charcoal was required.
My much neglected experiment finally got some attention today. The charcoal is done, and sealed. Now on to oil paint!
JayCat, the Studio Supervisor is hard at work...
I've been struggling with a nasty bout of artist's block. The sticking point seems to be the fear of messing up in progress pieces.
I'm trying to break through that a little today by starting a project that is a bit more of an experiment. Since the final result is less important, maybe I can bypass the fear of failure.
This is Alena. Her memorial portrait was commissioned as a gift, and was one of the smoothest projects I've ever worked on.

Tap, tap, tap... So many tiny little hairs to go, so little time!
I was working on the details here when my husband came in, and making a Bob Ross reference, asked if I was adding the trees, and branches.
I told him "Yep! Happy little slobber over here!"
Why Paint the Background First? In creating an animation recently, I found the perfect visual representation of my explanation!
How do you create three original portraits of the same subjects, while managing to keep vitality in each painting?
It's a challenge! I'm working on a blog post to tell you all about it.
Have you gotten frustrated trying to reserve white areas, or trying to apply masking fluid with precision? Here's a trick that I use to get extra fine, or tiny areas of white highlight.
Only try this if you are using at least 300lb watercolor paper, and in an area where you don't plan to do any more painting.
Wahoo! I've finished the big Christmas commission that has been keeping me busy, and challenged. Stay tuned for after Christmas Day when I can share it with you!
A little holiday cheer for the gibbet cage mannequin!
Be sure to protect your watercolor paintings. They're just one stray drop of water away from total disaster.
This is just a drop of water applied to a layer of dried watercolor paint, no detergents, or bleach mixed in.
Looks like I'm under supervision again. How does he always know when I'm nearing the end of a project?

Let’s do an art share post 🙂
Post a maximum of 3 pieces of your art below with any of your respective pages too. Please don’t be afraid of posting your art for fear of being inferior to others. If anyone writes any nasty comments or belittles anyone then they will be removed. So everyone be nice please :)
Like most supervisors, JayCat disrupts more work than he facilitates 🤣 At least he makes amusing faces while he distracts!
Black is just black, right? Not by a long shot!
I rarely use a pre-made black. Here are a few of my preferred mixes in watercolor.
Do you paint? What are your favorite recipes for black? Other mediums (Oil, Acrylic, etc.) are welcome!
Winifred has landed in the studio!
