6 Reasons Your Business Should Write a Book
When it comes to marketing, most small businesses stick to the traditional sense of the word. But, there are some areas that few businesses branch into that can come with high rewards.
One marketing area that helps build your company brand, attracts potential clients and can increase revenue is publishing a book. Not sure if a book is best for your business? Check out these six reasons your business should write a book.
1. Establish your credibility.
Writing and publishing a book for your industry sets your business apart from all the others and establishes you as a credible source for all interested parties. Think of it this way: anyone with a future interest in the trade can now come to your business for answers. Why? Because you literally wrote the book on it. Writing a book shows you are an expert in the field and promotes your business reputation as professional and insightful.
2. Share your knowledge.
Not only does writing a book set your company up as a credible source for the industry, but it’s also an excellent way to share your knowledge with other small businesses. Compiling all of your knowledge from different outlets (e.g. social media, blog posts and website content) and putting it into one source is an excellent way to help further businesses that may be behind the times. Of course, remember not to share too much; magicians never reveal all of their secrets.
3. Showcase your brand.
Writing a book showcases your brand in a completely different way than it has been before. Now, consumers, competitors and future investors are actually engaging with your brand through a one-on-one firsthand experience. You have the power to control what message you want to portray and how you want to portray it through the words you write. With your book, your brand can be set up in a positive light for years to come.
4. Initiate connections.
A book establishes a whole new field of connections your business may have never encountered otherwise. You’ll soon be connected with other leaders in the field, interviewees and similar industries. All this may not even include the connections that can come after the book is published. Writing a book requires a lot of different parties’ involvement, and therefore initiates numerous connections for your company.
5. Gain more clients.
All of these connections and brand engagement are a great way to gain attention for your business, and in extension, gain clients. A book gives your company the opportunity to turn readers into customers who may be interested in your products or services. Include information for your website, webinars, email subscriptions, newsletters or free discount packets and watch as your book turns into a powerful marketing tool for your business. The more exposure your book receives, the more consumers will engage with your brand.
6. Promote content marketing.
Finally, writing a book is the ultimate source of content marketing for your small business. A book brings attention to you as an entrepreneur, your business and future industries worth exploring. When it comes to content marketing for your company, there really is no greater way to put your brand out there.
Marketing for your small business offers a variety of different fields to get involved in. One field in particular worth exploring is writing a book. While the investment may be considerable time and money, the return is definitely worthwhile, and will help promote your company more than you could have ever anticipated.
I’m still on rest for August, but wanted to share my earlier IG post on student loan cancellation. Text below so you don’t have to squint:
I've said it before and I'Il say it again: Not every program has to be for everybody. People with apartments pay for first time homeowner benefits. Young people contribute to Medicare for our seniors. People who take public transit pay for car infrastructure.
Maybe student loan forgiveness doesn’t impact you. That doesn't make it bad. I am sure there are certainly other things that student loan borrowers' taxes pay for that you benefit from. We can do good things and reject the scarcity
mindset that says doing something good for someone else comes at the cost of something for ourselves.
An example: If a person is blessed enough to be in a position to have paid off their loans, maybe they have a home now and benefitted
from first time homeowners programs that people crushed by student loans help subsidize when they aren't able to buy a
home because of enormous student debt. It's all comes around. It's okay. We can support things we
won't directly benefit from.
And one last note: we can keep pushing. Remember that the Biden administration didn’t want to do this *at all.* It was YOUR pushing, YOUR pressure, YOUR organizing that for them to this point. They have forgiven far, far more debt for business owners in the form of PPP who didn’t need to meet ANY sort of income requirements or means testing for almost $1 TRILLION in forgiveness. Mind you, forgiving ALL student debt in the US is about 1.7 trillion - you could undo the 2017 tax cuts for the 1% and forgive all student loans plus have money left over to contribute to universal childcare, tuition free college, homelessness, etc.
It is now up to us, and to you, to decide if we are going to stop here, or if we are going to keep pushing. I am very grateful for this watershed moment of a first step - it is encouraging, thrilling, and has already changed SO many people’s lives. But I am also thinking about how this still leaves a question mark for those in the highest amounts of debt, who need the most amount of help. So let’s celebrate and keep going ✊🏽

The reality is, direct mail remains a critical part of the mix. So the next time someone tries to tell you direct mail is dead, remember:
8 Reasons Direct Mail is More Effective than Email Marketing It’s an age-old debate: direct mail versus email marketing.
How To Use SWAG to Market a Business
When it come to marketing a business, there are a variety of different avenues to choose from. There’s print advertisements, TV commercials, websites, email marketing and of course, the wide, wide world of social media marketing. The options are limitless. However, there’s one tried and true marketing option which is as effective as it is useful: swag.
What is marketing swag, you ask? Swag are all things you can put a business label on and give away to current—or potential—customers. Consider items like coffee mugs, hats, frisbees, etc. Everything you might receive at a convention. The downside of business swag? You have to invest a bit of money to create your own. The upside? You create walking billboards everywhere customers wear or use the items. If you want to try a new avenue to promote your products, we have some ideas for how to use swag to market a business.
1. Come Up With Something New
One of the most important things to keep in mind when using swag is to come up with something new. There are plenty of promotional swag products out there which all look and function the exact same way. Even if the products are free, consumers can still get bored with the same thing over and over. Instead, stand out from the crowd and show the business is unique by coming up with something new to give consumers and turn them into customers. For instance, try a branded umbrella, a toy or a deck of playing cards. See what other businesses are giving away for their swag, then generate something new you can use instead.
2. Tie It Into Your Brand
As you decide what to use for swag, be sure to tie it into the brand. Slapping a logo on a swag item might be helpful, but you can really drive home the point with consumers if they remember how the item ties into the brand. For instance, if a university wants to reach out to prospective students, they might give away branded notebooks with their logo on them. Or, if a business works in the financial industry, they might hand out money clips with the logo. Recognize what the business does and the brand and image it strives for, then consider potential swag items which may align with it.
3. Offer Quality Products
Now, this is important: when you develop swag products, don’t be cheap. This can be tough, because there are certainly areas you want to cut down on costs. However, no one really wants a cheap piece of garbage with a logo on it. Instead, invest a little bit more money and offer quality products to your potential customers. While they definitely don’t have to be anything fancy or expensive, offering a quality piece of swag will actually grab consumers’ attention and show them you care enough about their business to invest.
4. Cater To Your Audience.
Next, be sure to cater to the target audience with your swag items. For instance, if you want to market to an older generation, maybe free earbuds aren’t your best bet. However, if you’re looking at the millennial generation, offering earbuds to go with their devices would be a great choice. Consider who you want to reach out to with your swag items, then think about what would work best to cater to the audience based on their demographics.
5. Leverage Social Media.
And finally, don’t forget to leverage social media. Social media is the best way to market a brand at lightning speed in this day and age, particularly when it comes to swag. Swag items tend to be very photogenic, and a great way of engaging with social media followers. Offer a giveaway on your social media accounts for followers to get swag, or encourage recipients to share the swag they receive on their own accounts by creating a unique hashtag. By encouraging followers to share photos of your swag items with their followers, you generate a type of influencer marketing, which can continually draw in new customers.
Giving away free swag is one of the oldest and best ways to market a business. However, there are a few tips and tricks in order to make it as effective as possible. Take advantage of these tips next time you want to successfully use swag to market and grow a business

Build Your Brand!
A brand helps your customers remember who you are, what you offer and even gives an inkling of what you stand for. To create a brand worth remembering, it takes a great deal of research and careful planning. When you know the right questions to ask and the right steps to take, you’re on your way to creating effective branding! Check out these tips to help you plan and execute your branding efforts.
Use Brand Archetypes
A while back, we discussed the importance of understanding and identifying brand archetypes. Brand archetypes help give branding and your marketing efforts a personality. They also help your company build deeper connections with your audience and set yourself apart from competitors. Conduct research on brand archetypes to set your business up for success and determine which you identify with.
Develop a Mission and Values
Your mission statement and values set the tone for your brand. That’s why it’s important to develop a narrative early. Have a brainstorming session where you ask questions to determine your mission and values such as:
Why does our business exist? Can we boil it down to one sentence and would a stranger be able to understand?
What’s our competitive advantage? Why would I choose our business over a competitor?
What do we want our customers to feel when they interact with our business?
What are the top drivers around our company culture?
What values would best describe our current employees and the way we do business?
Create Logos, Fonts and Taglines
Once you know what you’re trying to achieve with your brand, it’s time to create the materials to go with your vision. We’re talking logos, fonts, taglines and other branding materials. Don’t be afraid to enlist the help of experts if this isn’t your strong suit. There’s no shame in reaching out for help to develop your perfect branding package.
Create Brand Ambassadors
You don’t have to formally create brand ambassadors, although some companies choose to go this route. Some brand ambassadors will be organic because they have come to know and love the work that your business is doing. How do you get there?
Provide a superior customer experience, whether you offer a product or a service. Make sure that your interactions and your offerings are quality.
Arm your brand ambassadors with the tools they need to spread the word about your brand. We’re talking about landing pages that help capture new leads which provide your messaging the way you want it to be told. Also, talking points and ways to talk about your brand can be helpful for your brand ambassadors!
By taking the time and care to think about your brand and what your business stands for, you’re on your way to creating a brand worth remembering. If you already have branding you love, use this as a reminder to consider a refresh or time to check in to make sure your branding still hits the mark.

Marketing Misses to Avoid
We’ve all been there—you worked so hard on a marketing campaign, and it flopped. It’s okay that you took a swing and missed. A sure thing that suddenly turned into a not-so-sure-thing. They say that it’s not a failure—it’s a learning experience. Relax, we’ve all been there! Luckily, there are a few common mistakes that are easy to spot and even easier to avoid once you’ve done them. Take it from us and use these tips to steer clear of marketing mistakes. It’s time to put your business’s best foot forward.
An Outdated List
There’s nothing worse than spending time and money on something that never makes it to the intended recipient. Whether you mail an award-worthy direct mail piece to an old address or hit send to an invalid email, all of your hard work went to waste. That’s why it’s important to have a database of your audiences that you update regularly. Reach out every now and then to confirm if the information you have is still valid and how your audience would best like to be reached. While one person may prefer email, others will prefer good old-fashioned snail mail.
No Call to Action
Your marketing materials were well received… but what now? It’s important to have a clear call to action on every single item. This could be as simple as directing your audience back to your website or a bit more complex like following up to attend a specific event. Whatever you do, make sure your recipients know exactly what action they should take next.
Confusing Language
It’s important when writing your marketing materials that you know your audience. Grouping your audience into various personas can help make it easier to write your materials. Give your persona types a name, age, hobbies and interests. Consider brands they may love and how those brands speak to your audience. The more you can relate to your prospective customers, the more likely they’ll be to relate with your products and services. Remember to avoid industry jargon that could be confusing to new customers.
Ignoring New Avenues
It worked 20 years ago, so why isn’t it working now? While it is essential to stick to what you know, it’s also imperative to acknowledge new ideas and methods of marketing. Take a moment to try something you’ve never done before. It may help to take a pulse survey to see how your audience would like to be reached. Or, consider holding a test group meeting to see how your marketing materials are responding. You might just find your next big success story with something you’ve never tried before.
Not Tracking Your Efforts
If an email marketing piece is sent out and you didn’t track it, you’ll never know if it succeeded. Likewise, if a direct mail piece hits mailboxes and you didn’t use a personalized URL, you’ll never know if the latest increase in sales is due to your marketing efforts or a happy accident. That’s why no matter what you do, online or offline, track your marketing campaigns. Then it’s out with the old and in with the new. Whatever is working the best, you’ll be most successful to focus your efforts there instead of in channels or efforts that may not be working.
Mistakes happen. The most important part is what you do to learn from them. Take it from marketers who have been there… all of us! These common mistakes have happened to us all, but you can take steps to ensure they don’t happen to you. Next time, you’ll be ready!

5 Creative Branding Ideas for Your Business
Your branding says a lot about your business. We’re talking about your logo, font options and other graphic elements that are used consistently to identify your business. Branding is so important for a business that you probably don’t even think about where or how you’re using it.
Your website? Check. Email newsletters? You bet. What about other places that you might not have considered? It’s time to get creative with where and how you’re marketing to your current and potential customers! Check out these five creative branding ideas that you probably haven’t considered, but definitely should.
Dinnerware (Cups, Plates or Napkins)
Take a page from the book of fast-casual Mexican restaurant chain Chipotle. When they look at napkins, they see more than just a device to wipe your hands. The team at Chipotle saw a chance to tell their story on every napkin, cup and to-go bag. If you’re a fast-casual restaurant, then this strategy translates exactly to your business! If you specialize in something else entirely, there’s still room to use this tactic for your next event. For example, you could use the opportunity to put your message on cocktail napkins or swag bags at your next big event.
Packaging
Sometimes what you put on the packaging is just as important as what’s inside. Often neglected when sending out a direct mailer or a swag item, is how the goods actually arrive. By using your branding or other bright and creative designs, you’re more likely to get your mail or package opened by your intended recipient. Why stop at imagery? Tell a very heartfelt story that relates to the audience, all printed on the outside of the package. You may even capture the attention of those who are helping transport your package to its final destination!
Vehicles
Think of a vehicle wrap like a mobile billboard. While not for every business, if you’re looking to pull out all of the stops at the next traffic light, this is a show-stopping option. Consider adding your branding to a work vehicle that travels around the areas you serve. That way, next time you’re driving to a job or running errands for your business, you don’t even have to think about the advertising… it just happens! Make sure to include your contact info front and center, whether that be a website or phone number. The easier to remember, the better chance that people who see the vehicle will follow up and inquire.
A Digital Billboard
Even billboards have come into the 21st century. While you used to have to spend big bucks on a single billboard and hope that your message was lasting enough to stick, you can now get your branding on a digital billboard that rotates with other businesses. That means less cost for you, and more places you can potentially get your message. Research for opportunities close to your company.
Functional Items
Think differently for the times! Try sending a branded bottle of hand sanitizer to your customers or a branded face mask. If you can dream it, you can print it. It’s time to think outside the box. Other more timeless options include notepads, lanyards, tote bags and keychains. Think functional and useful in everyday life. Your brand will always be top of mind as they reach to use whatever product you’ve decided to brand.
How will your business get creative and brand outside the box (or even ON a box!)? Use this guide as a jumping-off point to lead a creative discussion with your team. You never know what’s waiting to be a big branding win for your business.
