From Index Cards and 3-Ring Binders to Computers and AI...

The tools we use can help us create successful music programs, build successful communities, and feel f*cking amazing in the process.

💻The Introduction of the Personal Computer

In the early years of my career, the 1980's, the logistics of managing a band program were manually handled through index cards and 3-ring binders—a time-consuming and inefficient process. The introduction of the personal computer in my seventh year of teaching marked the first major shift in how I organized and executed my responsibilities. This technology allowed for the digital management of student accounts, event planning, and music library information, dramatically streamlining administrative tasks and saving considerable time.

💪Adopting Charms for Integrated Program Management

As my career progressed and the demands of managing a large high school band program grew, in 2001 I found a solution in Charms, an integrated platform designed specifically for music educators. This tool consolidated fundraising, communication, calendar management, inventory, and more into one centralized location. Embracing Charms significantly reduced the time I spent on program administration by 5 to 10 hours weekly, allowing me to focus more on teaching and less on paperwork.

The most recent game-changer in my toolbox has been ChatGPT. Band Directors, it's Week 6 of our Boot Camp! Let's talk about the crucial role of physical movement in maintaining mental clarity and focus.

I spent decades with physical ailments. With 14 surgeries that included back, neck, hip and foot issues that had become debilitating, I was told to limit my movement to avoid pain. (That was BAD advice.) After using a walker and a cane for a long time because that was the only way I could walk without excruciating pain, I was convinced that this was how it had to be. But five years ago I finally learned how to use movement to support my body and joints and I feel better now at 58 than I did in my 30s! The right kind of movement for your body can work miracles!

How does your body feel? Does it limit what you can do due to pain, inflammation, or other ailments that interfere with your ability to function and enjoy doing things?

Here's why keeping active is vital for us:

𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Regular physical activity sharpens our brain function and concentration.

𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵: Exercise has a profound positive impact on our mental well-being.

𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁y: Staying active keeps us more focused and productive.

𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵: Regular exercise supports healthy brain function and memory.

As a component of the mPower Method, movement is one of the four main areas on which you can focus a little and get huge results.

Recently, I've rediscovered joy and fun in my classroom, and it's completely transformed my teaching. 😄 After the challenges of the pandemic, like many of you, I found myself questioning if I still had the same passion and joy for music education. 🤔 But, with intentional self-reflection and a commitment to my own wellness and productivity, I've reignited that spark. 🔥
