DO YOU HAVE DAY-TO-DAY CHILDHOOD MEMORIES?

As kids, we received constant directions from the adults in our lives to follow daily routines: get up, get dressed, have breakfast, brush our teeth, get ready, go to school, do our homework, and the myriad activities that filled our hours until it was time to go to bed.

Sometimes we would listen and comply, but other times (or some of us 😂) wouldn't. Being the youngest of four, I would typically follow in my other siblings' footsteps. But that would not always end well, and we got "in trouble." Meaning time out and no playtime.

For parents, it can be frustrating to get their children to comply; we all have experienced this. However, a popular theory to address this issue widely recommended by professionals is "child-led play." These short daily sessions or "special time" allows the children to interact with their parents without the stressful element of having to follow directions and rely on the child to make the majority of decisions when engaging in play. This dynamic, in turn, strengthens the bond between parent and child and provides the kid with invaluable self-confidence.

SONGTELLER, MY LIFE IN LYRICS, by Dolly Parton.

This beautiful coffee table book has a special place in y creative realm (my studio/office). So when I saw it in a bookstore a few years ago, its title drew me in like a magnet. "Songteller" what a perfect description of herself!

The book celebrates her remarkable life and career, including unpublished images from her personal and business archives, memorabilia, anecdotes, insights, and candid stories—one of my favorite photos is her childhood coat, the inspiration for the song "Coat of Many Colors."

In addition, it contains lyrics to 175 songs. We learn what inspired Dolly to write those songs in her heartwarming words. It is her memoir, perfectly crafted to reflect her essence, the one of a country music and pop culture legend.

Why the title? She says: "I decided to call my book Songteller because that pretty much sums me up. I love songs. I love to tell stories, and most of all, I just love to write. It's just who I am."

And why do I post about this? Because I have to confess, something like this would be my dream project!

HOW TO START A LEGACY PROJECT

As it happens to most of us, after a loved one has passed, we find ourselves with photos, memorabilia, and all the “stuff” they kept as precious items from times gone by.

You realize at that moment that a life well lived is worth commemorating. So, you want to honor that person and make something that your children and their descendants will treasure and help them appreciate their ancestors and learn about their life.

This is a legacy project: A single memory-keeping project that documents a loved one’s life. But, large or small, legacy projects can be intimidating, and maybe you need help knowing where to start.

Here are a few guidelines.

• Collect the photos, memorabilia, newspaper clippings, personal items, and anything you consider relevant to illustrate the story.

• Get organized. Create folders and boxes with everything you’ve collected. You can sort the photos and items and group them by theme or life chapters. This is the first step to help you decide which and how many sections your project will have.

• Identify the most significant periods of your loved one’s life. The project doesn’t necessarily have to follow a chronological order. You may want to start with the stories that matter most to them.

• As much as possible, be selective and don’t try to include every single detail of what you’re documenting. More often than not, one item (photo, memento, document) will suffice to tell a particular story. At the same time, make a list of what mustn’t be left out.

• Decide which format fits your needs better: a book, a video, an album, or a presentation for an event. Then consult with your family members and determine how to approach the project. As a family endeavor in which you gather your innate talents (there are always many within a family) or by hiring a professional to work with you.

If you follow these suggestions before you know it, you’ll have all you need to start creating and celebrating a life well lived!
