Here are some explanations of alternatives to saying "good job!" to your child:

BE SPECIFIC: kids need to be told WHY they did well so they can replicate that behavior in the future! For example, instead of “good job,” try: “you picked out your blue sweater and zipped it up all by yourself!”
FOCUS ON THE PROCESS, RATHER THAN THE RESULT: comment on their effort, not the result! For exampe, instead of “good job getting 100% on your test!” try: “you must have worked so hard studying!”
AVOID PRAISING KIDS FOR THINGS THEY CAN'T CONTROL: avoid praise about things like intelligence, attractiveness, athletic ability. Instead, praise children about things they CAN control, like effort, generosity, and attitude. Let them know that you value them even when they're not "winning."
SAY WHAT YOU SEE: praising your child on what you SAW them do lets them know that you noticed and helps them take pride in what they did.
ASK THEM QUESTIONS: allow your child to decide for themselves how they feel about their accomplishments and encourage them to internalize what they observed about their own achievement efforts. For example, after your child builds something with Legos, ask "what was the hardest part to build?" or "why did you choose those bricks?"
SAY THANK YOU: Often, when we say 'good job,' we are trying to show appreciation. So, next time your child puts away their toys without being asked, respond with "thank you!" instead of "good job!"

At Summit, our therapists use a variety of breathing strategies and tools to help kids feel more regulated after engaging in heavy work, tasks that are viewed as challenging, and working on emotional regulation/sensory strategies. Five finger breaths are tracing one hand using one finger. Breathe in when you are going up a finger and breathing out when moving down a finger. With the technique of "Smell the flowers, blow out the candles" breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds, breathe out through your mouth for 4 seconds. Infinity or figure eight breathing exercises are using one finger and going in a figure eight. Breathe in when you go up and out when you are going across and down. lastly, Sunshine breaths are when you raise your arms up and breathe in to make a big circle and then when you exhale your move your arms back to your sides. Each of theses strategies have great benefits! Talk to your therapist if you have any questions
