Earlier this week we had General Dynamics Mission System (GDMS) stop into our Mid-Continent Engineering facility for a “Banner Celebration”. We always like it when they come to visit us, and we are beyond excited to be a part of this opportunity. We were able to capture a couple of pictures during the celebration, check them out!

We would like to tell you about our succession story when we partnered with GPS Education Partners. The apprentice work-based program was new to our organization, and we weren’t sure how it was going to pan out. Avery joined our apprentice work-based learning program at Mid-Continent Engineering in February 2023. She was 1 of 4 that had joined us as an apprentice in 2023. When she started working for us, we let her work in every department, and had her rotate departments every 2 weeks. Avery was learning & gaining experience like reading blueprints, operating CNC’s, assembly, welding, masking, and much more. Avery expressed that favorite departments were machining and masking.

We received great feedback from her mentors Goran V (Machining Lead 2nd Shift) and Al N (Advance Machining Trainer- Light Division). They said it was like a breath of fresh air working with these kids! We asked Avery what her plan was after high school…. If she was going to attend a technical school or go find other employment? She said, “No I want to work with CNC’S”! As the program was coming to an end because Avery was graduating from St. Louis Park High School in June, we decided to make her an offer for full time employment. She accepted and is now a Machine Operator and she also assist in other departments, as needed.

This was a learning opportunity as a company, as well. Learning how to make sure that the apprentices are getting the mentorship/ training that is needed so that they can be successful. This was just a small step bridging the gap between manufacturing and students- Success!!!!
