Female History Month continues as we look at Dolores Huerta and her amazing accomplishments. Born on April 10, 1930 in Dawson, New Mexico, Huerta Discrimination also helped shape Huerta. A schoolteacher, prejudiced against Hispanics, accused Huerta of cheating because her papers were too well-written. Huerta received an associate teaching degree from the University of the Pacific’s Delta College. In 1955 Huerta began her career as an activist when she co-founded the Stockton chapter of the Community Service Organization (CSO), which led voter registration drives and fought for economic improvements for Hispanics. Despite ethnic and gender bias, Huerta helped organize the 1965 Delano strike of 5,000 grape workers and was the lead negotiator in the workers’ contract that followed. Huerta was the driving force behind the nationwide table grape boycotts in the late 1960s that led to a successful union contract by 1970. In 1973, Huerta led another consumer boycott of grapes that resulted in the ground-breaking California Agricultural Labor Relations Act of 1975, which allowed farm workers to form unions and bargain for better wages and conditions, creating the first Farmers Union in America. The recipient of many honors, Huerta received the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award in 1998 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. And as of 2015, she was a board member of the Feminist Majority Foundation, the Secretary-Treasurer Emeritus of the United Farm Workers of America, and the President of the Dolores Huerta Foundation.

The Forgotten Grandfather of Civil Rights, David Ruggles.

Born in 1810 in Norwich CT and schooled in religious charity schools. He began as a Mariner in New York before buying grocery store. There he preached anti-slavery retoric where he believed slavery abolitionist's should strive to aid the people in human bo***ge instead of philosophizing about when slavery would end. His grocery store was also a Library used to promote Anti-Slavery publications and reading rooms for African Americans that were denied access to New York Libraries. It is considered to be the Nations First Black owned bookstore until it was destroyed by a mob in 1833. From 1838 - 1841 He wrote, printed and published “The Mirror of Liberty.” the first journal edited by a African American .During this time he was also a conductor on the underground railroad helping at least 600 enslaved including Fredrick Douglas reach freedom. And soon after he founded the New York Committee of Vigilance which confronted “ kidnappers “ people that were slave catchers. And offered legal assistance to keeping there newly attained freedom. Do to his success he was one of the most hated abolitionist’s in New York. From his store being burned down, being kidnapped by a slave catcher himself being a free man, multiple lynching attempts and frequent physical assaults Ruggles continued on with his fight for freedom and equal rights. Though his body would begin to fail him becoming ill and nearly blind. He relocated to the Northhampton Association of Education and Industry, a utoipianesqe settlement established by abolitionists. Where he was able to find not only companionship but also rest. There he structured many anti slavery rallies as well as erecting the first building dedicated to hydropathy treatment. Regrettably his health would again become a concern with him passing at the youthful age of 39. We hope to help bring to light the wonderful accomplishments this American achieved, and the sacrifices and pain he endured to attempt to allow everyone to live the Freedom of the American Dream.
