In this first episode of a 2 part series, we talk about how Kelsey found her way in to sport and why she chose the career path in therapy. We are convinced - therapy and sports were designed to be woven together! Take a look at the emotions and sensations wheel as we talk about it briefly in this episode. Athlete’s take on mental health 🙌
Jenny Schweigert, from Napa CA currently in North County San Diego
Occupation:
🔸Former Dog Walker and Data Analyst.
What sport(s) do you compete in or what is your athletic background or specialty?
Spartan races, ultras, trail running, road running. Not much background until 2012 I started running 5ks and in 2015 I started running Spartans.
While you enjoy your sport or practice, describe a more recent mental or physical hardship or realization in your journey?
🔸I am not a natural athlete, I train very hard to finish middle of the pack. I raced Spartans from 2015-2018 for fun, and moved to age group in 2019. I finished last most races. In 2021 I trained myself 3 hrs a day 6 days a week to move to middle of the pack, and in 2022 I hired an ocr coach to program my workouts. Finally in September 2022 I finally got my first legit OCR podium! So one realization that I had to mentally overcome through the years is that if you want it, you have to work hard for it, and nothing worth having is easy. I also realized over time that winning a podium, while an amazing feeling, is not why I race. Spartans have done wonders for my mental health, my shyness, and my confidence. For me, sports are more about the everyday journey than the trophy.
How do you balance the reality of life and its ups and downs, but also have a "commitment to growth" mentality?
🔸It’s definitely tough, as in the last 3 years I was diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and PTSD. One thing I have learned is that even if you’re stuck in a depressive episode, making time for workouts is important for long term mental health improvement. Even if I cry the entire workout, I always feel better when I’m done than on days when I skip it. Growth is one day at a time, and each workout, even if it’s a poor quality one, is another step towards your goal. For
me, it also helps to have a compatibility partner for various workouts or to create a schedule and stick to it.

Do you know how to release C02 more efficiently?
In todays podcast, we got Hawaiian Native, 3x Spartan AG World Champ, OA Breath Coach, XPT Water Pro! Coach Jono gives us the rundown and a lesson on breathing techniques when under pressure. Anyone who dives and carry’s boulders along the ocean floor as a hobby knows something we don’t know about breathing. And that’s Coach Jono for ya! What is your background in sport?
Don't have much of a background in sports other than pop warner and freshman high school football. I have always wanted to compete in track/field but was hanging with the crowd and got into drugs and alcohol. I am currently competing in Age Group Spartan OCR, fell in love with the sport when i was going through sobriety, i now have 4 years sober!
While you enjoy your sport or practice, walk us through or describe a more recent mental or physical hardship or realization in your journey? This can be from a recent event, life, or training.
How much time do I have? Haha. In the last 4 years of sobriety and competing I have discovered more about myself than ever. I recently lost my spiritual momma to cancer, when I received the news of how serious it was, I had a spartan race in San Diego. I was thinking to myself and asking what I was doing there? That I shouldn't be here? I was already sleep deprived because i had spent the night with her to watch over my momma. I then asked the Lord for strength, and said I was doing this race for her. I got to pray with a brother there at the start line and to my surprise placed third in a new AG!
How do you balance the reality of life and its ups and downs, but also have a "commitment to growth" mentality?
I have a great group of men/mentors in my life that keep me accountable and we push each other to strive and thrive as masculine and Godly men.
How has sport and training benefited you, and are there any other key things that have played a role in helping you thrive?
Staying active and competitive has been allowing me to stay sober and grateful for my health. I have much more value and appreciation for what we can do with our human bodies. A combination of my faith with sport is the only way I have been able to grow and mature in life.
Everyone has mental health needs, and learning how to be real with those needs and having the vulnerability to share those needs is what makes us as athletes stronger. Share your story- link in bio

What sport(s) do you compete in or what is your athletic background or specialty?
OCR / Hybrid Racing / Trail Running
While you enjoy your sport or practice, walk us through or describe a more recent mental or physical hardship or realization in your journey? This can be from a recent event, life, or training.
Just last week while doing a Quality run workout I found myself questioning “why do I do this” the answer was simple after thinking. I do this to escape the stresses of life. After training I feel so much better physically but most importantly, mentally.
How do you balance the reality of life and its ups and downs, but also have a "commitment to growth" mentality?
This is tough to manage. I just take it one day at a time same as when racing instead of getting overwhelmed with the distance of the race I take it 1 mile at a time. I believe if you minimize the totality of the race or struggles in your life you can see day light at the end of the tunnel and power thru.
How has sport and training benefited you, and are there any other key things that have played a role in helping you thrive?
Training and racing has made me a better all around human. It gives me the strength and power physically and mentally to overcome tough situations in life.

028. Lunchside chats: Grant Napierala- Keep Moving Forward.
Grab your lunch, because it's time for Lunchside Chats!
We couldn't be more stoked about the launch of this series and these conversations. Lunchside chats are designed to be short, meaningful, and something you can listen to during lunch or on your commute. We also are aiming to talk with more people. Pros and Specialist are great, but we'd be missing 1000's of athletes if we left the interviews to just that. In Lunchside Chats, you'll hear from all types of athletes and enthusiasts.
On this first episode of Lunchside Chats, we introduce Grant. Such a good time. Grant was originally a collegiate Water Polo athlete but then converted into a runner. Grant walks us through this journey and we learn so much about perseverance. He is driven and he is going to the top.
- you are the man. We will see you out there!
WE DID IT! The WOVEN ATHLETE COMMUNITY HIT WELL OVER 1000 plays and it continues to grow!
