Perennials and Landscape Design

06/09/2024

I keep hearing people say “I have to cut down the garden, I have to get these bushes pruned, etc.” SLOW DOWN friends, slow down. Let Mother Nature do her thing, let your plants die back as much as possible (or leave them alone til Spring), when the temps are in the “no more sweat anywhere zone” and stay there for more than two weeks, then go ahead and chop away. But until then, enjoy the rest of these warm sunny days that we waited so long for before we’re doomed again ❄️ 💙 ☀️ 🍁

Remember that just killed grass circle? Welllllll it’s a new garden for one of my most favorite humans! We moved some plants from one area to the here, added a few others, added the rocks that we picked out of there and next Spring she’ll have some fresh mulch and Spring bulbs! 🥰

Accurate 👌🏼
Except I kind of look like the right every day 😂

Privacy fence comin’ atcha like 💥🌲
Did you know that Green Giant Arborvitaes are the fastest growing evergreens for privacy? And, as if that wasn’t good enough, they are pest and disease resistant…sooo bug off evergreen bugs! She loved them so much we need more 😍

Always have more than one landscape happening at a time 🤦🏼‍♀️ These pretties are headed for a privacy screen 🌲 💚

Landscape one: a beautiful pond that got four new, huge willow trees that I clearly forgot to take an after picture of 🤦🏼‍♀️
Landscape two: we filled in the hydrangea tunnel with a shorter version of hydrangea called Tidbits!
Thankful for my husband & Hunter today because those willows were massive and HEAVY! 🩶

Out of all the things we did today to prepare lots of landscapes for this weekend’s festivities, helping a painted turtle cross a busy road was by far the most important 🐢 ♥️

Making one of my most favorite landscapes full of flowers, even more beautiful with fresh mulch! Also, peep that hummingbird mint aka Agustache aka part of the hyssop family. The smell 🤌🏻 and that color though…one of my absolute favorites!

How it all started….
…and not to keep you hanging, but Michelle Hunt will have to tell you how it ended since I forgot to take pictures 😂😂

Today we made some magic happen 🪄✨

The only before pictures I took were the first two and one was after I ripped out dead bushes 😭 I always forget! But if you know this garden, you know it was WEEDS. All weeds intwined in plants and bushes that were rotting away. She said cottage landscape, and we gave her a cottage landscape. They always say perennial gardenda rake 3 years to reach your dream, one they establish, two they bloom & grow and three they are BIG & BEAUTEOUS! Pictures do NOT do this place justice, its blooming with colors and just gorgeous. 🌸🩵

Let’s have a chat…
Landscaper is such a vague term in todays world. From lawn mowing to hardscapes, you’re a landscaper. And I don’t discredit anyone doing this work, it’s hard.
Some of us went to school for it, some learned from years of experience and others just wing it.
What makes a true landscaper? One who knows the difference between all the fertilizers and knows what your landscape needs, one that preps your landscape by using hand tools and elbow grease to get out the weeds, one who takes pride in knowing that once that mulch goes down they have done everything necessary to feed and prep your landscape for the best growth and thriving conditions. One who knows the difference between zones, which flowers grow where, what blooms when, diseases and how to cure them, repels the deer to save your gorgeous plants, and designs landscapes without ten million bushes because they aren’t afraid of losing flowers. They give you advice, they help you see your vision and they love your landscape like their own. THAT is a landscaper. You are literally “scaping” the land to make something beautiful. Yes, lawn mowing falls into this category too. But I don’t mow lawns. I landscape. And I do it with my whole heart. 🌸 🌱 ♥️

What started as a mess turned into discovered treasures! 🥰

We had a little mulch washout last year so this year we made a cute little cobblestone lily way to stop that nonsense 😆 🌱 Also, those white peonies though 😍

My gardening friends with fur children! 🚨 Wild Parsnip is no joke, I’ve come in contact before so when I tell you DO NOT TOUCH without gloves and arm protection, I mean it.

Did you know the most common mistake made when planting a wildflower garden is not waiting for the soil to reach 55 degrees? This little slice of wonder was killed awhile ago, tilled and finally seeded tonight 🌸♥️

Between rain drops, endless laundry, cleaning and celebrating one of our favorite girlie’s birthday…I walked through one of my own gardens and got lost for a minute 💜

Sometimes the places I end up and the people I meet restore my faith in humanity 💚 Todays adventure brought me to the woods and to the cutest couple I may have ever met.

Last May on our Lancaster trip, we stopped at a little road side perennial stand and met 5 little amish kids selling perennials from their garden. They had them in yogurt containers, ice cream buckets, old shoes, anything they could find with a big sign that said “we need pots”. Today we pulled into the same farm house, now with 6 kids, and dropped off two huge bags of pots from last summer for them and bought a whole table of their plants 🥰 They were so happy, and took Gavin and Leni to show them their animals. I ended up getting a free plant that they were so proud to share with me and such a full heart ♥️
