☔️ One inch of rainfall creates approximately 623 gallons of water falling on a 1,000-square foot roof. Slow it down and soak it in!

Low Impact Development (or LID) are methods and techniques that are used to slow down, spread out and soak in stormwater on site. Incorporating these practices reduces the amount of stormwater leaving your property and slows it down.

Reducing the speed and volume of water helps protects the receiving streams and minimize erosion. On the reverse-side, there are options that may work for your home to help slow down, soak in or spread out stormwater as it flows over your property.

‼ HUMMINGBIRDS ARE COMING! ‼

Want to attract hummingbirds to your yard? Here's a recipe for hummingbird nectar:

Ingredients:
🌺 1/4 cup white granulated sugar (don't use alternative or "healthier" sugars as they will spoil faster and can cause a growth of bacteria)

🌺 1 cup water

Instructions:
🌸 Boil water, add sugar, stir, and cool.

🌸 Do not add red dye.

🌸 If making large batches, store excess in the refrigerator.

🌸 Replace hummingbird nectar every 3–5 days (or every day in 90ºF or higher temperatures).

🌸 Clean the feeders at least once a week with hot water and a bottle brush. Do not use soap or detergent.

🌸 Occasionally use a diluted bleach solution to clean the feeders. Rinse thoroughly and air-dry before refilling.

Thanks, Dr. Becky McPeake, for sharing these tips with us!

John Albert Burr was an inventor who patented one
of the first rotary blade mowers in 1899. Born in Massachusetts to enslaved parents, Burr would have been just 17 years old at the time the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Formerly a field hand, Burr was especially skilled at mechanics and went on to earn a living repairing and servicing farm equipment and other machines. Local wealthy activists learned of his talents and sponsored his tuition to attend an engineering school in Massachusetts. He continued his education at Harvard Business school and his upon graduation in 1870, he moved to Chicago and became a steel worker.

In 1899 Burr received a patent for an improved rotary blade mower, designed to reduce clogs from grass clippings and increase ease of use and maneuverability, making it the preferred choice at the time for closer mowing around objects such as posts or buildings.

John Albert Burr held over 30 patents for innovations lawn care and agriculture. Burr would go on to receive much notoriety for his inventions including receiving royalties, traveling to speak and lecture around the country.

Burr lived until he was 78 years old and his legacy lives on in modern lawn care equipment. Today’s mulching power mowers are part of this legacy, returning nutrients to the earth instead of bagging for removal/disposal, helping save labor while helping the environment.
