When does St. Nikolas arrive in Germany 🎅🏼
Children in Germany are not only getting ready to open their Adventskalender or advent calendars but are also counting down the days until St. Nicholas Day! St. Nicholas Day or Nikolaus, sometimes also spelled Nikolas is the Patron Saint of Children, and on December 6th, children throughout Germany wake up to find small gifts and goodies in their shoes.
On the evening of December 5th, children not only place a boot or shoes outside their bedroom doors but also have to clean them first, hoping St. Nicholas will fill them with presents overnight.
St. Nicholas Day goes back many, many years ago and is based on a true story. St. Nikolas was a Bishop who lived in the fourth century in Myra, now part of Turkey. He was a very rich man due to the fact that his parents left him a small fortune when they died. Rather than keep the money, he decided to give all the money away to the needy, especially the children. Because of his kindness, he was made a Saint.

How Germany celebrates Christmas
A Christmas visit to Germans: which rituals are important and why potato salad is part of the festivities.
The first taste of Christmas arrives when Lebkuchen (gingerbread) and Spekulatius (gingery biscuits) suddenly appear on the supermarket shelves at the beginning of September. From the first Sunday in Advent onwards, Christmas markets, Christmas hits on the radio and Christmas lights spread the Christmas spirit throughout the land.
Do only religious Germans celebrate Christmas?
No. Although it is the Christian festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, Christmas is also celebrated by Germans who do not profess any faith – by 78% in all. Celebrating Christmas is an important family tradition for most people. Roughly one in four Germans go to church at Christmas. Attending the Christmas service at midnight on Christmas Eve is a ritual that many would not like to miss.
What are Christmas traditions in Germany?
According to a survey by the Yougov market research institute, most people said Christmas involves candles, a Christmas tree, baking Christmas biscuits and buying presents. In 2020, almost 25 million Christmas trees stood in German living rooms – preferably real ones, because plastic imitations are frowned upon.

Is German chocolate the best/
There are many different types of chocolate, and they can vary widely in taste and appearance. Two of the most popular types of chocolate are sweet milk chocolate and German chocolate. But are they the same? Sweet milk chocolate is made with a combination of sugar, milk, and cocoa beans. The milk helps to create a smooth, creamy texture, while the sugar adds sweetness. German chocolate, on the other hand, is made with a blend of sugar, cocoa butter, milk, and nuts. This mix gives German chocolate its characteristic sweetness and richness. So, while sweet milk chocolate and German chocolate may share some similarities, they are not the same. Each type of chocolate has its own unique flavor and texture that makes it special.
Dark chocolate varieties available are semi-sweet and German sweet chocolate. Chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, sugar, emulsifiers, vanilla, or vanilla flavoring, as well as emulsifiers and sprinkles, are all included in their recipe. Their flavor and application differ, as do their cooking and baking qualities. Semisweet chocolate is also used to make cookies, brownies, cakes, puddings, frostings, and sauces.
Because of its soft texture and ease of melting, milk chocolate is generally sweeter and less bitter than dark chocolate, and the milk content is higher. This cake can be eaten raw because it melts quickly in a pan.
According to the chocolate story, an error in a newspaper recipe for the first German Chocolate Cake left out the “s” in the name, and the chocolate is thus known simply as “German.” This type of chocolate contains more sugar than a semisweet chocolate.
