How are you doing during this COVID19 pandemic?

Personally I'm not very good at sitting still so I'm quite anxious but I'm going to use this time to grow closer to God, make connections and ADVOCATE!😘

22/03/2020

One major facet of the COVID-19 pandemic is that of all populations, it affects the disability community the most. And currently, our federal government is looking to provide funding in order to support everyone in these needful times. However, it appears as though individuals with disabilities are being left out, yet again, when it comes to receiving the assistance that they need to live healthy and complete lives.

For example, a third bill being entertained by Congress should provide the following to ensure that the disability community is wholly supported.

1. Extra funding so Medicaid can still provide home and community based services during the crisis.

2. Making sure family caregivers for adults with disabilities are covered by paid leave.

3. Making sure that people on SSI or SSDI are able to receive cash payments like everyone else, WITHOUT worrying about income or asset limits.

4. Making sure that people with disabilities can get our medications refilled.

5. Making sure the disability community does not face discrimination in health care.

6. Protecting the rights of students with disabilities.

7. Permanently reauthorizing Money Follows the Person, to make sure that people who are institutionalized during the crisis can return to their homes and communities.

So how can you help ensure that these 7 things are included in current legislation for dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic?? Contact your local legislators and share the points made above!! You can do this easily by using this easy tool found through this link below:

Urgent request! Please share! The US Senate is working RIGHT NOW on the COVID-19 stimulus package. It is really important that YOU contact your US Senator to let them know that we need to have the items in Senator Bob Casey's Coronavirus Relief for Seniors and People with Disabilities Act, whether as part of the main bill or its own bill, either way. Please use this alert below. Please also ask your friends and families to do this too! Please share!

“Right now, the US Senate is working on the details of a massive COVID-19 stimulus package. We must ensure that disability concerns are not left out. More than 105 million Americans—or about 4 in 10 adults—are at heightened risk if infected with COVID-19, including older adults, people with disabilities and those with underlying health conditions. The front-line workers and family caregivers who support these individuals also face increased risks, requiring additional resources and supports to protect their health and well-being. Your help is needed to alert Senators that we need disability funding in this package. Use the form below to send a quick message.”

Not only is it hard to reach out for help because of fear of pain, life circumstances and sometimes just plain old depression but It's hard to get the correct treatment. Doctors don't usually try to manage pain and manage addiction, that's a huge barrier that needs to be addressed!

A huge thank you to Julie Cochran For beginning this beautiful program. I'm honored to be a part of it😊

Today, we would like to honor Julie Cochran. Julie played a significant role in the start of the Ms. Wheelchair America organization. She was the first Ms. Wheelchair Ohio titleholder in the early 1970’s, which is where the organization began. Julie is also believed to be the first person who used a wheelchair to attend Ohio State University. Her advocacy work truly made a difference for many.

Later this month, Julie will be receive recognition at the Ohio State University Mansfield Campus Hall of Fame Awards.

This is such a well deserved honor for Julie and the Cochran Family! May Julie’s legacy continue to live on through all the people that she impacted and through all of us at Ms. Wheelchair America.

Pictured: Julie Cochran often had to be carried up the steps in Derby Hall at Ohio State by fellow students.
