Provost Home Design LLC is looking for a freelance designer to help with residential additions and renovations.

The position requires emailing, calling, and texting potential customers to set up meetings, meeting with potential customers to talk about their ideas and the specifications of the project, measuring the existing structure, and relaying all of the information back to Michael Provost so he can provide a proposal to the customer. Once the customer accepts the proposal, you would then draw the plans in 2 phases. The first phase would be preliminary design of the floor plans and elevations. After the customer approves the design, you would then create the construction documents.

The position requires:

Knowledge of residential construction framing and detailing.

Some knowledge of structural design.

Knowledge of residential design codes and the ability to review the codes for required information.

Knowledge of CAD and 3D modeling design.

The ability to drive yourself to and from customer meetings.

You have your own computer to design on thats capable of handling 3D design software.

The ability to converse with customers, ask appropriate questions , and listen to ideas.

We're under contract! For the last year plus, not only have I been designing full time, but I've also been managing the construction of this beautiful home.

Now that it's just about over, I'll admit that I was overwhelmed. I was stressed out. I had sleepless nights. I had anxiety. I learned a lot though. I made some mistakes through the process. There are things I will do differently next time.

Overall I'm glad I did it. It gives me a better perspective of the business in which I'm drawing plans for.

I'm sitting here in my office working on a project and I get a phone call. In response to the call I stop doing what I'm doing, close the project, open a different project, and proceed to work on that project.

In a perfect world, I would work on things in order as they come in. You call or email me something, it gets put in line after the last thing that came in. It would make scheduling a lot easier.

The truth is, there are bigger customers, and there are more persistent customers. They come first. The bigger customers provide more work, so you want to keep them happy. The more persistent customers are constantly calling and emailing looking for their plans. In this case, it's not that I want to keep them happy (even though I do), I just don't want to deal with the constant phone calls and emails. So I tend to get to their stuff sooner rather than later. It's not all that fair, but that's business.

My customer requested an A frame home to be built up in snowy Maine. How'd we do?

After my post yesterday, I received some photos of another customer's house. How'd we do?

From a computer generated 3d model to construction to occupancy. It's unbelievable how accurate software can be in this day and age. If you can dream it, we can draw it.

This looks about right. My 4 would be: 1. Concept drawing, 2. After client review, 3. After client gets pricing from builder, 4. After construction.

Coming to Seekonk soon! This house has 2,929 sq. ft. of living space. Four bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths. The Great Room over the garage is spacious. It comes with a cathedral ceiling and a kitchenette. There's also the option to add a bar with seating. The stairs start at the basement, with access from the garage, and go all the way up to the 3rd floor.
