One of our Young STEAMers class was a whirlwind of learning! We explored forces and their effects on movement, using tug of war and seesaws as examples.

We also delved into symmetry, discovering that butterflies are perfectly symmetrical. Our hands-on activity involved creating our own symmetrical butterflies, which we balanced on our fingers and noses.

The students were amazed to find the exact point where all forces balance out.

Today, July 25th, we celebrate Dr. Rosalind Franklin birthday.
Dr. Franklin was a British chemist and X-ray crystallographer whose work was central to the understanding of the molecular structures of DNA (as well as RNA, viruses, coal, and graphite). Franklin's contributions to the discovery of the structure of DNA were largely unrecognized during her life, for which Franklin has been variously referred to as the "wronged heroine", the "dark lady of DNA” and more (see references below).

Rosalind Franklin's story is often cited as a prime example of the injustices faced by women in science. As an X-ray crystallographer, Franklin played a crucial role in uncovering the structure of DNA. Her work provided key data that were instrumental in James Watson and Francis Crick's elucidation of the double helix structure of DNA, a discovery that won them the Nobel Prize in 1962.

However, Franklin's contributions were not fully recognized during her lifetime. She faced discrimination and marginalization in the male-dominated scientific community of the time. One of the most infamous incidents was the unauthorized use of her data by Watson and Crick, who obtained a critical photograph, known as "Photograph 51," without her knowledge or consent. This photograph provided crucial insights into the structure of DNA.

Her story highlights broader issues of sexism and gender inequality in science, which persist to this day. Women scientists faced obstacles such as implicit bias, unequal opportunities for funding and advancement, and a lack of recognition for their contributions throughout history and unfortunately till this day.

Efforts to address these injustices are being made, and include promoting diversity and inclusion in STEM fields, advocating for equal opportunities and recognition for women scientists, and raising awareness of the contributions of overlooked figures like Rosalind Franklin. By acknowledging and rectifying past injustices and working towards a more equitable future, we can create a scientific community where talent and contributions are valued regardless of gender.

Dr. Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958)

🐧✨ Our Young STEAMers explored what makes penguins unique among birds. Unlike most birds, penguins can't fly but are exceptional swimmers, navigating the frigid waters of Antarctica for up to 5 months at a time! Their secret? Dense, waxy feathers that repel icy water and keep them warm. Antarctica, the largest frozen desert on Earth, is their home, surrounded by the Southern Ocean. It's fascinating how these flightless birds have adapted to such extreme conditions. We even created paper penguins with waxy crayons to understand how their feathers stay dry in the water. 🌊❄️

Bring STEAM Enrichment to kids in need 23/07/2024

Imagine being a child facing the uncertainty of life in an emergency shelter. Amidst the challenges, these kids often lack access to educational resources that can spark their curiosity and ignite their potential.

We are launching a fundraising campaign to raise $1,500. This amount will allow us to bring our STEAM enrichment classes to the kids in one of San Francisco's emergency shelters. With your support, our passionate instructors will meet these kids twice every month throughout the entire school year, bring all the materials needed and provide them with consistent, high-quality educational experiences. And you can help!

Together, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of these children. Let's give them the chance to explore, discover, and dream. Every dollar counts!

Thank you for your support!

Happy National Ice Cream Day 🍦!!! Ever wondered why ice cream is so irresistibly creamy? 🍦✨ It's all thanks to the delicate balance of emulsions and crystals! Emulsifiers like egg yolks or stabilizers help create that smooth texture, while controlling crystal formation ensures it stays velvety. Science never tasted so good! 🧪🔬
